Good first attempt but lighting is uneven. Using onboard flash + DIY diffuser would be sufficient in this case. I think a diffuser with your SB600 would work better than a bounce card.

Your flash/bounch card wasnt the cause of your focus problems.
Quite a lot of us still use inbuilt flash with DIY difuser, so I wouldn't go all out and buy a ring flash just yet.
The trick to getting more in focus is to use smaller aperture (around F16, depending on the size/dimensions of the subject).
Looks like your focus was too deep, you got the body/nose instead of the eyes.
Try to take the shot from side on or from the front or top. This should ensure that you get most of your subject in focus.
Also, the further from the subject (less magnification), the more you'll get in focus. So I find it better to take the shot from a little further away and crop the subject.
Also, when taking outdoor shots in the sun, take shots with the sun behind you if possible. I cast my body shadow over the subject and still use a flash. This will solve most exposure/lighting issues.
What lens did you use?

The saturation looks like its abit overdone.......Too much red and green.
