1. Is the above combination possible? If so, how to configure a master and slaves?
2. What is the most common way (and accessories) to use non-wireless off-camera flash setup, and what will the costs be? Are there 3rd party (read: cheap!!) cords available? My friend got an SB-27 that's hardly used. So I'm contemplating should I buy it from him to. Thanks a lot. ![]()

1. Yes. You can use MULTIPLE flashes in multiple groups. The on-board controllers can control up to 2 groups, A and B. The controllers on SB-800, 900 or SU-800 can control up to 3 groups. you can have more than 1 flash in each groups. Look it up in the user manuals of the flashes.
2. Wired flash? Then go look for SC series cables, SC-28 would be a good one. I personally won't reccomend 3rd party cables for this type of work. SB-27 will only be able to be used in A mode (non-TTL auto) or M mode. |

1. Do you mean like a wired SB-900 can be used as a master to control its "community" of 3 groups of flash, while multiple masters command their own groups? There's too much info in the manual since i'm not familiar with the setup. Thanks for enlightening.
2. Good lead. Additional question: 3. Will any flash (non-Nikon) be usable with the above? Will need to justify between the costs for the setup and a CLS enabled flash.

Nikon compatible flashes which can be used on the hotshoe can all be used on the extension cable.
It's a form of extending the hotshoe contacts to another location. You can also add more cable connections on and use more than 1 flash. As for CLS AWL (Creative Lighting System's Advanced Wireless Lighting), if you have a D70 and above camera, you can use the pop-up flash to work as the commander to trigger off the remote flashes (SB-600, SB-800, SB-900). Else you have to use a SB-800, SB-900 or SU-800 as the commander to trigger off the remotes. If you are using a SB-900 on the hotshoe, you won't need to wire it and keep it off-camera. It can work on the hotshoe and fire off the triggering flash signal and trigger off the other flashes. Under the SB-800 manual, it's described on page 74. |
