Default Newbie sunbird shots

Some recent shots from my excursions to BG Heliconia Walk. Still learning the ropes here and am trying to improve on composition and background. All shots cropped and USM and some levels applied. Comments appreciated, thanks...

I find the background a tat too distracting, choosing and framing it in such a way like now is taking the attention off the main subject.

Just a tad too far from the bird. Were you already as close you could be without scaring it away?

Thanks mega and BS for the comments. I agree with you guys that the background is too distracting for most of the pics...need to practise a lot more and improve on my techniques. Getting a clean background is really the challenging part.

Yes I try my best to get as close as possible to the bird without scaring it away. Equipment used for the shots was a 70-200mm w/ 1.4 TC. For this combo, still not enuff reach to fill the frame for these tiny birds.

Actually, I did use a 70-200 to shoot before and I can easily go near those birds. With the 1.6FLM, at 320mm, it a very good range. Just that you need to know when and how to approach the liitle guy!

*I've been trained in stalking.. guess that help?

Try to avoid shooting when the sun is strong. Alot of shadows for the first 3 photos.

*Wake up more early la!*

Actually your shots are good, given for a beginner, able to snap the sunbird in focus is already something good, next step is to move in closer and snap with better framing! Step by step and then buy a 500/4 and also 1200/5.6 ... oops OT liao

I've had problems catching the sunbird also, I only manage to catch a sideview and it flew away. Tough subject

Gotten what yet?

To catch a sunbird, one must think like a sunbird...

So how to think like a sunbird?

hehe... i also dunno

Garion: Good effort u have there. Its not easy to get a clean background, but continue to try and one day you will nail it!

p/s: One thing BS and Kei taught me was to move slowly. No sudden movements... like tat you should be able to get closer...
