Hi all,
I know the 50D vs 500D thingy has been discussed somewhere here. But I would like to hear recommendation to my specified dilemma below. I've been using a 20D for some years. I'm very happy with its performance, but was thinking of getting a 50D for the following reasons: 1) Big & clearer LCD to check my shots... I find it useful after trying my friend's Nikon D300. 2) Better ISO for low light condition, not sure how bad/good is its higher ISO performance, as I've read some negative review in this aspect. 3) Faster focusing, I hope. 4) Same control and handling as 20D. Now that 500D is out, my choice is torn between this two camera. Reasons that 500D appeal to me are the following: a) HD video, useful to me when occasionally I want to take video of my kid and during holiday (don't ask me to bring another bulky video cam ).b) Much cheaper. c) Similar performance as 50D in terms of focusing and ISO, or am I right? But for the 500D, I'm also worried I may not like the handling and control... but if other aspect, say (c) is true, I think I can still live with that. Please don't advise upgrade to 5D, not an option to me. I belong to the low income class .Any advise is greatly appreciated. |

50D has got 9 point cross type focusing, faster than the 20D's centre cross point.
ISO you migh have to wait but then again, when you print both the 50D and 500D pictures out on 4R, i doubt you will even notice the differences. 500D video is very useful, esp with/for kids. Imagine capturing their play at the beach, their 1st walk, 1st papa/mama, birthday parties and so on. If you're hesistant, and really want the XXD features, wait for the 60D. Get an Ixus (3' LCD, IS, Wide angle, Pocketable, Video) in the meantime and keep shooting with your 20D. It's still a very capable camera. Because if you get the 50D now, 6-10 months later when the 60D comes out at the same pricepoint with the HD video and new stuff, you'll feel the pain, esp when the 5D MkII and 500D already has video functionalities. |

both are going to be 15MP sensor but I believe 500D sensor is not exactly the same one as the 50D so you might have to wait for the reviews to come in and see if the ISO performance are comparable. If you are familiar with xxD handling, you will have a bit of re-learning to do with the 500D's handling. If the smaller size is not a problem for you, then the only main decision point will be the HD video. Heard people complaining about 20fps HD recording but not sure how that much difference that is going to be compare to the 30fps...

Personally, I prefer the control of xxD. I have tried xxxD before. I really cannot get used to it.
Also, 500D HD video 1080p is only 20fps, which is not really so-called HD. It is a bit jerky. So, I suggest, wait for 60D if need the video func. Now, can use a compact camera shoot the video. |

Why don't you get a 40D instead?
While I won't say the video is a useless feature, for it to look reasonably good takes alot more effort than, say, a HF100. |

I think that the 500D's Full HD 20 fps is a compromise. IT IS.
I was lucky enough to test it out on a 500D on my friend's memory card at J316 yesterday. 20 fps is not silky enough. You will feel that it's 20fps. |

I'd go with the 50D. If you really want the video. Wait for the 60D. Should be coming up soon.

Yeah, actually, you've got a good point. They might not be sticking with the 18 month release cycle anymore with the D90 on their tails.

40d to 50d was only 1 year.
450d to 500d was also 1 year. |

for 500D, there is not much of a difference. maybe the video function and its 3inch 900K dots is a good site for this model, beside there is not really much diff compare to 450d. so it is better to hold for awhile unless you are sick of big size body.

Skip the 50D and go for the 60D if you can wait.
If you can't then get the 500D and keep the 20D around as a spare body - its got ok AF and higher fps. |

Just for info for those interested in the 500D's video feature and are worried about the 20fps, the 500D can also take videos at 720p at the full 30fps which is still quite fantastic and also given that full HD at 1920x1080 is also quite hardware intensive to edit/store/play. Just thought I'd mention it because it wasn't stated here in previous posts.
