Guys, was playing with my cam and 580EXII yesterday and notice that my camera aF light did not come on when I was trying to snap low light or in total darkness.
I tried playing with the camera Cfn to enable auto assist light and still get the same thing. Next I reset all the custom functions oon the speedlites and everything was still the same So I thought maybe the light doesn't come on on the 5DII or the cam doesn't need the AF light, so I fixed the 580EXII on my 400D and still get the same results, the red AF light didn't come on. I then took out my 430EX and put it on the 400D and still doesn't get the red AF to come out of the speedlite. After that, I tried using just the 400D pop up flash and instead of the flash pre fire, the camera small light (the one that indicates timer countdown), light up intead. SO my questions are 1. Does the canon speedlites AF assist light project the red light (I thought they did) 2. Was there any other custom function for AF assist light other than "enable af assist light -emits" 3. Are there anythinng wrong with my cams or speedlite Thanks

My 430ex emits red beam during AF (i think it is 3 vertical red lines).
With built-in flash, the camera flash will burst short flashes during focusing.

Just found out the reason.
It was my AF setting, At AF "One Shot" or "Auto AI", the red light emits and pop up will fire pre flash at AF "AF Servo", the red light does not emit and on the 400D the small light wil emits instead.
