I've been thinking about that too, but currently the 2nd hand price of D300 is not very attractive (to me, yet). I figured that I'll have to top up about $800 to get the D300 (which is quite a sum to me). So, I voted for others, which is to get more FX lenses of course. Will only upgrade when D700 can be had for the current price of D300. Hopefully in a few years. Besides, D200 is a great camera already (besides the noise).

Thinking of new D700 or 2nd hand D300 too.
My friend told me no point going to D300 as not much different compare to D200 other than ISO.

Im not buying new DX lens and turn to prime lens for FX reason , when considering a year ago betwen 17-55 f2.8 and prime lens. I only shoot when free and most of the time my cam is in dry cabinet so not willing to spend so much on equipments unless the share market giving me good profit. ![]()

I think this is a good answer to all "is it worth to upgrade/buy xxx?" questions. And I would like to add another statement to it...
"Can't others shoot what you want using your current setup?" If any of the answer is "No", then you should ignore the BBB virus. But... it's always easier say than done ![]()

I think the only reason for me to upgrade body is the better ISO.

Upgrading from D80 - D300 makes a BIT more sense, but not totally. But in any case, one main reason for this upgrade too is, for sure i will be sticking to this body for a few years. True, D300's successor might be coming out in late 2009, but doesnt mean it will be cheap. Judging from prices in the past, its gonna be something like 2600 or more when it first launches, and will drop only after 1 year to something closer to what i will pay my hard earned cash for. So looking at the timeline, it will be another 1.5 yrs or so before the prices drop. So, definitely I should be getting a good enuff body to satisfy my BBB urges (for bodies) and last till another one comes.. and by that time, DX or FX? depends on my dough. FX is good to have, but I wun die without it. I am only a hobbist. And to think about it, right now i can still name quite a few pro photogs still working with D300s.. |

Recently I was pondering over this upgrade question as well. In the end, I've decided that the D200 is still a great camera except that its high ISO capability is not as good (or comparable) with D300. The live view and 3" LCD are nice to have but not critical features. So, meanwhile, I am enjoying my D200 and stop buying any new DX lens. When the time comes to upgrade to FX, it will be less painful.

Selling a body with shutter count between 20k and 40k, the price different is not much as compare the benefit from the more you shoot the more you learn.
Buy a car and mostly park in carpark vs use the car alot which is more worth it? I will stay with my D200 and try to shoot more if I could for the time being. Thanks for all the sharing post.

no point upgrading unless you really really need higher iso quality. even then, a d700 might be a more worthwhile jump. besides, are you going to make larger prints to take advantage of the improvements? only you can answer.
