Default Compare Tamron 17-50 to Canon 24-105L

I am interested in the 24-105L, as a replacement for my Tamron 17-50 and Canon 70-300. I know I know, i will lose range ... but i have the 10-22 and besides, 90% of my shots are in the range handled by the 24-105 so i am thinking about this.

What about the quality... has anyone here compare results from Tamron 17-50 to the Canon 24-105?

Thanks for sharing

how can a third party len compare to a canon L series top notch len?

17-50mm and a 24-105mm range should not compare in this way IMHO.

if you are upgarding to a same range maybe you can compare with canon 17-55f2.8IS.

anyway this len is only lost out to tamron for its f2.8 aperture that's all and everything else is much more better than the tamron.

anyway 24-105L is a fanstatic lens to own, you will be surprise this len will mount on your body most of the time.

Well, I sold off my tamron 2 days after I got the 24-105... never looked back.

Actually I think it depends on your shooting needs. I currently own a Tamron 17-50mm and it works great as a utility lens in low light and indoor situations when I'm not using my prime lenses.

That being said, I'm intending to get my hands on the 24-105mm F/4L for outdoor day-shoots due to the better range and IS feature.

In indoor and low-light situations the IS function IMHO does not help much because unless you're shooting inanimate objects, the subjects will be motion blurred anyway at F4. The IS feature just allows you to leave your shutter open 3 stops longer for more light to be captured while at the same time keeping the camera stable.

Thanks for the replies. keep the advice coming.

ggodetucsamoht, thanks for the feedback on the Canon. I realize i'm not asking for a direct apples to apples comparison but i am looking for feedback from people using both lenses. IMHO the Tamron 17-50 and 28-75 stack up VERY WELL against the Canon 17-55 and 24-70L. I personally would not see the value in upgrading to either Canon's, not for my casual use. the 24-105 offers more versaility though, hence the curiousity

no worry.

both 17-50tamron and 24-105L are good lens, it worth every of your dollars and cents. but maybe you might not able to perfom some shoot with one compare to the others thats all.

if you are looking for walk around shoot shooting len, 24-105 still deliver the best range than 17-50tamron

Hi TS,

Why not rent the 24-105L for a day to try out if you are comfortable with the range. Personally, i'm in the same dilemma as you now, but i've kindof gave it MUCH thought through the months and had even rented the 24-105 lens for a day to shoot under various settings, and i'm in love with it.

I love the range at the tele end and i don't miss the wide because, like you, i've my 10-22 to cover if in need. I thought i'll need my UWA but turns out, the 24-105 was on 100% for that day : includes day shoot at SBG and indoor shoot at a recital hall performance.

But i just might consider getting the tammy at a later stage, when and if i need that big aperture, and i'm renting a 70-200 next week!

all the best in your lens purchase!
