Default New Olympus E420

Could anyone recommend to me what lens should i buy if i only want to use ONE lens only?
My main concern is that i can use my e420 like normal compact camera with superzoom (10x of course with better quality picture).

You could go for the Zuiko Digital 12-60mm, or the 14-54mm if your budget isn't that huge.

agree.

for better IQ and faster shooting, 12-60mm or 14-54mm

for all-around, walkabout lens Zuiko 18-180 will do. since you want superzoom, this might be a more suitable choice. but since its a slower lens and e420 has no IS, make sure it suits your shooting style

if u wan a gd zoom and better quality... think as mentioned by drewdam.
Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-150mm f3.5-5.6 is best fit u.

1st: E420 doesn't hv body-IS while the lens has Mega OIS which helps for unstable hand (but i dunno it works well between leica lens and oly body anot, senior pls advise)

2nd: Image quality has been tested by a lot of seniors here and is very good.

3rd: Although it might seems expensive but to achieve tat zoom wif substantial quality, u might nid to get 14-54 and 50-200 which will cost a total of about $1500 (a rough estimated for 2nd hand and non-swd version). I guess the 2nd hand price for 14-150 is also ard tat price but it eliminates your trouble to SWITCH lens and WEIGHT. But the con is u wun get to use F/2.8 which is the biggest aperature available for the Oly 2 lenses and loss of the extra (200-150) = 50mm frm the telezoom.

Thank you for all of you for your replies. Actually price of lens is also a main concern for me, as i only step from a compact to DSLR. Now only i know lenses are soooo..sooo..so.. expensive, the main reason i bought this camera is bcos it is the cheapest DSLR i can find. Now i think i will look for used lens. Must work hard to search for the cheaper lens online.

I have just check with one of the digital camera website that they use E520+Pl 14-150mm. So think it fits for Oly e420 also.

i'm not trying to say it can fit anot... since it's 4/3 lenses, it definitely can fit on to Oly too. I'm referring to how well it works wif the Oly. For e.g. Maybe the focus motor might be slower to work on Oly than of Panasonic, etc. All this I dunno cuz i nv use b4

Hi, are you formerly a compact or prosumer user? what was your previous camera?

Actually given your criteria I dont think a DSLR is particularly suitable for you, and here's why I feel so:
1) You want a superzoom
2) You want cheap
3) You want 1 lens only

The only lens that fits this criteria is a 18-180mm. But with a e420, I doubt you will be able to make full use of the telephoto end of the lens, as you do not have IS, and may find it tough to avoid blurry pictures

I would suggest you either:
1) adjust your expectation of a DSLR system, and perhaps start off with the 14-42 kit lens to learn more about about your camera and what you want
2) get a prosumer/bridge superzoom camera. like maybe the fujifilm s100fs for example.
3) get a olympus DSLR with in-body stabilization and buy the 18-180

Also, one of the points of getting a DSLR is flexibility in changing lens. Getting a superzoom in a way defeats the point of a DSLR, plus the 18-180mm is not the sharpest or best lens in terms of image quality. A quick search online would show you user reviews of this lens

Also, the 14-42, 40-150 double lens kit can be bought for pretty cheap at the moment. Cheaper than the 18-180 (and lighter too even). Plus u get the extra wide angle at 14mm as compared to 18mm.

not sure why you want to sell it off... the e420 is a good camera for what it was targeted for. it seems that you havent used it much and you might want to explore it a bit more. so in case you do want to upgrade, you will already know what you want

but if you really want to go back to compact, im sure there will be some willing souls to trade with your e420

Actually, you might want to consider the 25mm pancake lens.

It should suffice for most situations, and with it's f/2.8 aperture it should help with the lack of IS on the E-420 body.

On a sidenote, primes are a great way to improve one's feel for framing a photograph

Ok guys, i think i am out of mind now. I bought 18-180mm today. I just hope i have e520 so that i can shooot with IS. Anyway i try to shot indoor night light/room light at Shutter speed of 10~25, at ISO400 and most likely 800. If i were have e520 i thnk i shound be able to shoot at maybe 25~50.... that would be enough for me. (i will show you the photos, but anyone to teach me uploading? I read thru the FAQ in this forum but still dont understand)
