Well, that would depend on how much he is willing to carry isn't it? For the day to day travel, he probably won't be carrying the macbook around, just the camera and the lens.

ya probably in a sling bag , nah i got it at a cheaper price. anyway , i decided to sell both my lens to get a 17-40 instead as im thinking of going into FF soon .so i will only be bringing a 17-40,50, and lensbaby.

what type of field trip is this going to be? don't bring too much equipment or you'll end up being the photographer for the whole trip instead of enjoying yourself.

one more thing to note. since it's a field trip, don't have the mindset that you'll have the time to set up your tripod for every scenery shot as the group has a schedule to meet. travel light, keep the unnecessary stuff like laptops and printers at home. bringing more memory cards is more compact than bringing a laptop.

    my advise is: Go Light

You are not there on a photography trip. 18-55 is more than sufficient. You want to enjoy your time there. not to waste time fiddling with the lenses and all.

tripod that's all.. and i really wonder if the 20-35..are you gonna use it?? No joke carrying all that equipment around when you don't really need it aye... because most of the time you'd be rushing for trains that's why bringing more equipment means heavier and i don't really think you'll enjoy your trip that much if you bring too much stuffs.. And i'll not bring my tripod everywhere i go (too heavy) and my lappy too..so most of the time they'd be sitting in the lauggage in the hostel... Hope you have a fun trip ^^ june's pretty hot..went there in 2004
Hi, I also have a Kata 467 which I am thinking to bring for my Japan trip. which airline did u take? can it fit under the plane seat (not keen to leave it in overhead compartment)?

that's considered medium to me.. if i were you, 40D + 17-40 and flash will be enough. you can always ask a passby to help take group photos..it's a field trip. enjoy yourself!
