Guess what,i was thinking weather to get a d90 or d300.But im more onto d300 coz after all d90 is somehow considered as a entry level .But I heard that d300 is not the sharpest amongs it competitor. But its the functions that attract people

I was a D200 user then switched to D90. Will not go back to D300 until the HD video version comes out hopefully this summer. I am in love with the video option of the D90. Once you try shooting short video clips with a 35mm f2 with the depth of field you can get, its hard to look back as you will not get anything like it on a standard consumer video camera. Don't say you don't need video. That's what I used to say to myself until I had the function. If you have a family, snapping a pic of your kids then switching to HD video is a sure winner.
If you are a hardcore photog, then video may not be a consideration in which case again, the gap between D90 and D300 is not so much the sensor, (almost identical). The difference is in the ergonomics and of course some of the high end features that the D300 has such as customised presets for your lenses and full compatibility with your older nikkor lenses if you are into that. Don't be fooled by the sharpness arguments. It is common for entry level cameras to have higher in camera JPEG sharpening, so the pics look sharper straight out of the camera. Try shooting RAW and you can see a difference between the D90 and D300 in favor of the D300. The only thing I miss about the D200 is the feel of the camera in my hands. So if that is also important to you, then do consider the D300 instead. However if you try the video....you might just think twice. rajesh

You prefer D300 because D90 is "somehow considered entry-level?" That's not a good mindset.

having owned a d50,d70, and used the d80 and d200, and now owned a d90, its really a huge big jump. d40/40x/50/60/70/80 are all using the same speed - 2.5-3fps while d90 uses 4.5fps. Also the functions on d90 with the video mode is of different range from the rest. The only sad and bad point i found of D90 is that with grip, the FPS doesnt increase unlike the d300 where when u use grip, the FPS increases. shooting at 2.5fps/3fps is something i hated. if you miss the shots... you miss it! but with d90 4.5fps, its hard to say you miss it, you might but at least your shots are still "nearer" . TS, i would say... RENT OUT the D90 and D300 for at least a few days .. mayb 2 days then decide *ps* a d90 is like a d200 to me.. haha...... Last edited by NeTHaCk; 22nd March 2009 at 11:45 PM. |

budget not an issue? dun waste time lah. go straight for D700
d300 user here btw. ![]() anyway, between d90 n d300... small hands> d90 lightweight>d90 movie mode> d90 ease of use>d90 Focusing speed> d300 large hands>d300 like tough n beefy camera?>d300 (actually d3 will be the best!) weather sealing>d300 burst shooting>d300 functions>d300 controls for ISO, WB, etc etc>d300 which are your priorities?

function-wise lose out, but pic quality wise, your d90 shd be much better.
comparing d40/40x/60 to d70s and D1 series, the picture quality is so much better. i even prefer d40x colours to d200 colours.

coming from a person who's used 2.5fps (d50) and 3fps(d70), that extra 2-1.5fps does make a lot lot lot of difference... |

D90 is no doubt an excellent camera, with all the basic necessities packed into 1 neat and light body. Give me another chance to buy a camera now, i will STILL have a problem choosing between D90 and D300. PS to bro NetHACK: try renting a D300 and D700 to use for a few days. you will know why D90 still belongs to the "serious amateur" range, instead of a pro range. |

haha, budget is not a problem with D700 too but the size of D700 is really a turn off... even my current D50 is a pain in the neck literally.
I noticed that on the D300 mount there is a spring like thingy.. is it for AIS lens? |

letting my buddies using d80 and d40s test it out, yes it is indeed a huge jump for them. its true that the dXXX series are meant as pro body, but you see, coming from a person who started waaay down, its a huge difference. peoople like me who're used to 3fps and bad noise control will find it a huge jump. Apologies, i didnt state clearly . huge jump can be subjective . i would have gotten the d300, but you see, i wasnt the one who paid( loan from parents while i pay off after doing my paid shoots) . shooting paid shots using d50/70 and 80 had its limitations. with the d90, me and my buddies broke free from those chains. I know how the machine gun sounds like music to my ears ![]() |

Same here!
PS: Machine gun is quite useful when I take HDR shots handheld. TS might want to consider that maybe?
