Default are you using portrait or landscape layout when you shoot?

hi everyone,

i just noticed that i am more keen to use protrait format rather than
using landscape. as a result, most of my pics are on portrait layout.
i know it differs because of the subject you want to shoot, but i want
to know your thoughts about it.

cheers!

Both, or it depends on who i'm shooting for, and what kind of camera I have.

If I'm shooting a covershot for a magazine / newsletter (not saying that I have), they'd want portrait orientation shots. If I'm shooting on a 21mp 5Dmark2, then they can crop portrait orientation as and when they like from a landscape shot.

Instinctively, though, I would shoot landscape mode on my camera, because I have a hand-strap and no neck/shoulder strap (except for events).

Read a good book on composition. Both have their distinct visual effect. You should not favour one over the other, but rather choose the format to convey the effect you want. If you favour one format over another without actually knowing why... then there is much to learn.

It is not possible to explain these things in a forum. You need pictorial aids to illustrate these points. So, I'd suggest you pick up a good book on composition... and not one of those generic photography books that talk about everything and leaves a small section on composition.

Due to the way our vision works (2 eyes horizontally aligned) the landscape orientation would the the way our instincts tell us. But again it's about composition and intention and the point to make conscious decisions instead of letting instincts run the show.

Instinctively it depends on what you are shooting.
But if you are referring to the percentage wise, i take more landscape format.

Used to shoot more in landscape.

But these days tend to shoot more street portraits and candids, thus more on portrait orientation....

It's really how you instinctively react to each individual scenario, isn't it?

Well, I like to shoot in portrait orientation, even though most of my stuff is in landscape orientation.

Why not just refer to the existing thread?
