Appreciate the help

Hi all,

Recently got my wife a LX3 for X'mas cos she wanted a camera that is better than normal compact digital cameras. She loves it and now wants to get a DSLR to learn to do more stuff...i have been asking around and reading up on what i can do with the LX3...seems like it can do quite a lot of stuff...but i have ZERO knowledge on photography except pointing snd shooting....SO.....what DSLR cameras would you guys recommend that is above average...

I want to get something that is pretty ok rather than get a entry level DSLR...I would prefer to learn and be able o keep and use it for a longer time....

Waaaay too many variables, but the best way to start is to ask her what kind of subjects she intends to shoot.

Be careful of 'this one is best lah' type advise, and look for balanced objective opinions instead. Each and every camera and supporting system, as well as agent support has it's advantages and disadvantages.

that was a quick reply, totally agree with you. but what i meant is that the DSLR is for me...haha...want to surprise her...so im gonna be a total noob and get a decent one and learn from there...just want comments on what you guys prefer....its like looking at which car has got a higher population on the road visually...hahaha...

so im just gonna take a blind stab and just go ahead and buy what you guys think i should...anyways im looking at a 2nd hand one...not brand new....just in case i wreck it before i learn anything man....

oh...and 1 more thing...i think if i look for a "all-rounder" rather than one that is fantastic in certain areas would be a better buy...what do you think??

I would think that for entry level, you might wanna consider canon 1000D or Sony A200. Wiith the latter being cheaper with more features. But the former is better in terms of image quality and lower noise at high iso.

If you guys are first time into DSLR, I would recommend Sony's because they have features that cater to people who never used a DSLR before, and its very user friendly.

thanks for the help...i guess my budget for a body alone is about 500-800....lens is not much of a issue...at the end of the day if i pick up this hobby good, i guess i will start to PIMP MY CAM...right?

Most dslr users will recommend the brand that they are using because it is good for them. Since you are willing to get a 2nd hand dslr I would suggest a Nikon since it has the best backward compatibility with lens so the 2nd hand market is much bigger. However, the cheaper lens are fully manual and you would only be able to use them after you have figured out how to set exposure manually. It doesn't take long but it can be intimidating if you have only ever used point and shoots.

Best is to go to a camera shop and hold all the cameras and try taking some photos to see which model fits your hands and feel good. It would also be helpful to choose one with a menu system that you find intuitive. You learn much faster that way.

And I am a Nikon user so I am biased towards Nikons because they work for me. I personally hate the sound of the Canon shutter even though I have friends who say it the Canon shutter sounds really cool. So, take everything you hear with a pinch of salt.

I'm not sure if youc an fit within your budget, but if you say you don't want entry level, but something that can last a while, then you're looking at a Tier 2 cam. For Nikon, that would be the D80 (or D90 now), and for Canon, the 40D/ 50D.
