Hi I just bought a canon 8800f scanner, I tried using it to scan color film negative, but photo color came out saturated and grainy.
For experience guru here may I know what is your setting used? |

What dpi are you scanning at? Do you know the ISO of film? That may explain grain...

Tell me more about the type of shot:
Exposure length = Aperture = Ambient lighting = Flash used or not = Film expiry date = Process for developing negs = Self or shop process = Can post scanned pic here = Y/N Complex Q = complex A, without the pic to speak a thousand words...

hi there. i used this scanner and the sharpness is horrible. the best remedy is to use a transparency to hold the film down. =) still the focus of the scanner is still slightly off on mine. hope this tip helps.

Hi, looking for some advice here:
Colour cast aside, how does the Canon 8800 compare in terms of resolution/sharpness to the scanning done by retailers? Thanks! |

yea, I feel that Fuji is cooler & Kodak warmer, thats my opinion anyway.
timlim: here are some shots scanned by canon 8800F. ![]() ![]() shot with Fuji Superia Xtra 400 I think canon 8800F is really a value for money scanner. Does the job well, if you dont like the bundled software, can always op for 3rd party such as Vuescan etc. |

OT
just wondering do you guys put a transparent sheet over your scanner's platen glass for protection in case when you do scanning, things might scratch it. |

I don't understand the trouble so much. Insert the film in the holder, move in onto the right position ofthe scanner, take out the platen cover and scan without any other processing (as mentioned above).
Oh, make sure your film is facing down the correct way, that might help too. Just an example here (15 year old negative), after scanning only curves and sharpening. Class scanner for an absolute bargain. ![]() |

thanks all for the answers. think the scanner is definitely competent for regular prints like 4R, just not sure if the resolution will stack up for bigger prints, esp if I want to do post-processing.
Louhan: can i trouble you to share some 100% crops of retail-scanned image versus 8800 scan? thanks in advance! |

Below a 100% of the B&W above, which is shot on a 35mm film. Original scan was done on 1200 dpi without any additional settings. Photoshop finishing was done with a slight curve and moderate sharpening.
![]() Sure, better results are most likely possible. This scanner, RM 700 in Malaysia. Now, think again. |

Hi cullenjeremy, I tried to stick the negative below the film holder using sticky tape instead of clamping it with the film clamp lever as instructed, I find the photo appears sharper.

The colour and grain look great in the pictures. is because of the scanner? normally i shot at nite is a bit noise for 400 film and the colour always turn to yellowy.
