Damage should be substantial, since it cause an internal explosion inside the merlion.

Only on the surface level. Damage is more cosmetic than anything. looks more like a bad haircut.

maybe they should replace the Merlion with one of those cute giant Japanese kitty waving and with sound-effect "huat lai, huat lai"...

Yeah agreed with you. if you watch discovery channel. the lighting will travel far into the earth and will crystallize the soil or sand into a fossil record of the lighting. Just like you see it in the sky, but fossilize in soil lol...

so if you cut the merlion into two... u probably catch the culprit entomb in the womb of the merlion hahahah.

having said that.. dun know how the cement will react to the lighting.

    Merlion re-opens in 2 wks

THE Merlion at Merlion Park, which was struck by lightning late last month, is expected to re-open in two weeks.

On Feb 28, lightning during a heavy downpour sheared off a chunk from the Merlion structure. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB), together with professional engineers and appointed contractors, have found the structure to be safe and sound after an assessment.

Immediate repair works, which are expected to be completed by March 21, will involve re-plastering the affected areas on the Merlion.

However, the wave form at the base of the Merlion sculpture will require a longer repair time. STB is consulting relevant contractors on how long the repair will take.

Steps will be taken to ensure that the repair works to the wave form will not affect the aesthetics of the Merlion when it re-opens, said STB in a statement on Monday.

This is the first time the Merlion has been hit by lightning since its inauguration on Sept 15, 1972.

Designed and built as a sculpture, the Merlion does not have a lightning conductor.
STB is now looking at possible lightning protection measures for the Merlion Park to prevent similar recurrence.
