just wondering why is the 1755 focus ring comes first before the zoom ring (towards the camera body) rather than the other way round....i have the tendency to accidently "re-focus" when i want to zoom instead. i find that rather annoying at times...does any other users have similar experience? just grumbling........

![]() personally, I'm fond of having the zoom ring far from cam body ![]() my left palm supports the lens from below and fingers naturally turn the zoom ring.. when I tried EF lenses like 17-40 and 24-105, it was difficult for me coz the zoom ring and focus ring are placed reversed to the EF-S lenses like 17-85 or 17-55..accidentally "re focus" everytime I wanted to zoom in or out ![]() |

from all your comments it seems that i need time to adjust my habit.....as i hold my left palm nearer to body and i zoom more than manual focus.
Other than liking or disliking it, does anyone knows the rational why canon has differernt placements of the rings for different lenses? i would understand if i am comparing different brands. |

Unlike the L series of lenses, the most of the USM lenses (17-85, 17-55, 28-135 etc) which supports FTM, have it's focus ring nearer to mount and are usually thinner than the zoom ring.

may be they distinguish "consumer" and "pro" grade lenses by placing the zoom ring & focusing ring reversed
![]() (not to mention 18-55 kit lens) Nikon also used to reverse those stuffs..you'll notice the focus ring closer to cam body in lenses like 18-70, 16-85, 18-200 etc..but more "pro" lenses like 17-55, 14-24, 24-70 have the focus ring further than zoom ring ![]() Last edited by aungzawwin; 1st March 2009 at 11:09 PM. |

received a call from Canon today which was pleasantly surprising. At first he mentioned USM, but i told him that is not the case for most L lenses. Then he said it could be size constraint and the design of the lenses. But ultimately, he admitted he could not give a technical explanation (which i expected) as it all lies in the person(s) who designed the lenses.
i guess i'll move on ![]() |
