Hi guys,
I've a 400D with its stock lens and i'm coming to find that there isn't much variety in the lens. Was looking for another lens to increase variety. one that has a wide aperture and good amount of zoom. please advice! p.s not looking for something too expensive. preferably under...$700? ![]() James |

![]() Or if you want something cheaper and lighter and which will complement your kit lens but without the wide aperture, you could go for the EF-S 55-250 IS. |

What lens you using now?
To be very honest....I wld encourage investing in a speedlight instead. It gives u variety in the sense that you can start looking at potriat and event photography. But if you only want get lens....and if yours is a kit lens (assuming 17-85 or 18-55), then then next option can be a 10-22. It should be within your budget.

Depends on what you shoot I guess.
Since you said the 70-200 f/4L is out of your budget, you can try the EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS for S$360+ I have shot lots of photographs with it (borrowed) and they are sharp if it's not at 250mm. I would suggest a 50mm f/1.8II for S$120 for your wide-aperture needs, an efs 55-250 for S$360+ for your zoom needs, and a 430EXII (S$430+) for your flash needs (I think it's a need in most situations, ymmv).

![]() yup 50mm f1.8 n efs 55-250mm is very typical and covers a large area. typical becoz its the most wallet friendly setup. a typical unfriendly setup will be the L lens. ahh...if i cld hv one.

The economical arsenal of a canon photographer now would be:
1.6crop Camera + 18-55IS + 55-250IS + 50mm f/1.8II + 430EXII flash. Should be about S$2k in total.

for me i realised i was being spoilt with the constant f/2.8 when i traded my tamron 17-50 f/2.8 with a canon 17-40 f/4L for a week. (yes ZX i was praying your L will magically turn to a constant f/2.8 lens. HAHA)

icic. so in a sense, this lens is somewhat an overkill but a good replacement for the stock lens?

Why you might want to get the tamron 17-50 is the f/2.8 that you will get. That's a life-saver to most professionals (the f/2.8) esp when they shoot in dark conditions.

Similarly, if you buy a 50mm f/1.8II for S$120, and you don't use it for a few months, that's kind of wasted.

icic. i see the logic now. The tamron seems like a good lens to replace the kit lens. so currently, my wishlist should logically contain:
Tamron 17-50 Canon 50 mm f/1.8II Canon 55 -250 IS 430EXII flash |
