Hi guys I'll be going to Europe on a backpacking trip for 4 weeks and am wondering what lenses I should bring. I'm using a 350d and current have a 10-22mm, 18-55mm IS, 85mm f1.8 and a 70-200mm f4.
I will definitely bring the UWA and am considering whether to bring the 18-55mm IS or to buy a 17-85mm IS for the trip. I heard the 17-85mm isn't that good a lens and the 18-55mm IS is actually sharper. Some of my friends asked me to get a tamron 17-50mm but I feel that IS will give me 3 stops advantage as compared to 2 stops advantage with the tamron. (f2.8 compared to f5.6). This should be ok if I only shoot buildings and museums which Europe is full off. Also, if I choose to bring the 18-55mm IS should I also bring the 85mm 1.8 along? My concern is to trravel light since I'll be back packing but I don't mind if there are a lot of opportunities for me to use the 85mm lens. Can someone who have recently been to Europe help? |

For any type of trips.. I'd suggest an UWA (scenics), Telephoto (street, wildlife etc) & Prime (low light)
But in your case, 10-22 & 85 1.8 would be ideal. Btw, a lightweight travel tripod would also be useful for self-portraits & long exposure~

I just went to Europe also on a 4 week backpacking trip, I strongly urge you to get the EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS if you plan to do lots of indoor shooting. Most of the churches/museums there do not allow tripod and flash.

I brought a 10-22mm, 18-200mm, tripod, remote and a compact digital camera. I shoot RAW all the way
Just in case I have no time to change lens, my dslr would be use as a UWA camera and compact digital camera will do the other. Happy Holidays |

the best is to get the tamron. why? because, it has a constant f/2.8. but yes you should bring along the 85mm if you're bringing the kit lens. AND actually, you can also bring the 85mm even if you decide on the tamron

Did you guys have many chances to use the 85mm? Or is the 18-55mm zoom enough to cover the range?

My last europe trip the longest I got was a 105mm, and it was only occassionally used. The 18-55 and a wide angle zoom can be pretty sufficient for me. Ryan |

my friend recently went to europe for hols, he mounted a 10-22 for at least 90% of the time. the other 10% was used on his sigma 30 f/1.4. but i would say a 85 might be useful is certain circumstances..

Hi victorlee
Lens you can bring along. Do remember a back up cam or PnS cam. Once the cam down ,whatever lens your brought along is useless. It a 4 weeks long trip.unless stand by a CC for instant purchase at the shop. |

I had 4 1-week trips to Europe for the past 5 months or so. I had my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and 70-200 f4. as small nissin flash, a tripod and a wireless remote trigger. I basically shot in small raw and low res jpeg. Since I was on business trip, I transferred photos into my notebook on a daily basis.
17-50mm - more for landscape and 70-200mm for people/street photo I am not that good at photography but here are some shots that I took using basically these two lenses http://jarrodstone.multiply.com/phot...del_Sol_Madrid http://jarrodstone.multiply.com/phot...Amsterdam_2009 http://jarrodstone.multiply.com/photos/album/66/66 http://jarrodstone.multiply.com/phot...onthofen_Day_1 http://jarrodstone.multiply.com/phot...-_Castle_visit enjoy |

I'm studying overseas in England (Leeds, West Yorkshire) and I actually made do with a 10-22 and a 50mm for quite awhile but you'll very often find you'll need something to cover the inbetweens so bring your 18-55 or something. 70-200 would be very useful if you are doing birding but if not, not reall, your 85mm would more htan suffice. Spring is coming up so the birds are starting to come round though.... |

Depends on what you are doing really. When are you coming down? Issit very soon? Or in 2-3 months time? Really depends on the season.
Flash is not allowed in cathedrals or minsters nor using tripods. Durham Cathedral is the worst, they don't allow you to take photos inside at all, period. But you might find it useful on the days when it is sunny because it can get really bright so you would need a fill flash. Yup. So bring it if you can, if not, bump up ISO or rely on ur in-built flash. |

For Durham expect to use an ultra-wide because the streets are super crammed! All the way up to the Cathedral. Hopefully your sibling can sneak you into the Castle because they have useless visiting policies due to it being a University.
