Default EFS 17-55 f2.8 focusing problem

I noticed my lens can't autofocus on some white object, wall/ceiling. Also have this problem in low light. Anyone having the same problem as me? Been to CSC to clean my sensor asked the guy attending to me about the problem. He just say its normal as most lens have problem focusing on white stuff. Is this true?

Lenses focus with contrast so don't expect yours to lock set on something with little or no contrast at all.

So far, I have never encounter any lens or camera (AF) that is able to focus on a white wall (or any even coloured wall).

its just normal... use your manual focus if the subject has very low contrast...

Erm, why are you taking a shot of a white wall/ceiling? It's good to know that your lense can't focus because it shouldn't ... place a black or prominent object in front and focus again, and if it works your lense is fine. it should work anw ...

if you really need to focus on a white object. use an external flash with the AF assist beam.

Actually discovered this when I tried to shoot the inner dome (top of the lobby area) at the Nasional Museum. Discovered it can't focus. Thanks guys for the replies.
