How long will canon keep spare parts?

Recently my friend asked me whether it is better to get a 2nd hand 300d and a sigma 18-200 OS or one of those 20x optical zoom prosumers. He doesn't care much about the movie mode and the weight of a 300d + sigma is still tolerable. The dslr would definitely give much better IQ and cost about the same or less than a brand new prosumer. His only concern is that a 2nd hand 300d will likely need to get the shutter replaced etc and given that it has long been discontinued will canon be able to repair it if it breaks down. Anyone here able to advise?
