Hi,
I am planning to buy my first DSLR and was deciding between D90 and 450D but decided to get the 450D because of budget and I hope it's image quality is almost as good as D90! Currently, I am in the dillema of whether to get the 18-55 kit lens or to just buy the body and buy a separate 17-50 Tamron lens which I read from here is a fairly value for money lens. I am getting this camera for travel initially but I will probably turn it into my hobby and shoot it for fun and learning. I really need your help to give me some good advise! Thanks very much! ![]() |

Weight is relative. Go hold it in your hands and feel it for yourself.

Exactly. We are talking about the 18-55mm IS of course. This lens is much maligned just because it's cheap, and it can get annoying sometimes when I see people bash it at every opportunity.

Tamron isn't that heavy at all, I felt that the weight is balance when it's coupled with my ex 1000D compare to kit lens.

I'd advice against it for an APSc body. It's heavy and the angle of view isn't very handy on 1.6x. The optical design is a little old. Quite a few have AF problems, and internal parts get worn out more easily due to the weight and tight fit required - and the resulting impact on image quality is substantial.

I got myself a 450D couple of months ago, and I found myself growing out of the kit lens pretty quickly. Don't be mistaken though, the kit lens is a good lens for starters but if you want to save a bit of money, just get the body and maybe the Tamron and maybe a 50mm f1.8 if you have leftover. I feel the best part about the kit lens is that while using it, you slowly discover what you want more in a lens, be it low-light capability or larger focal length etc etc.

That's what I thought too. I am trying my best to save a little money and at the same time avoid the hassle of selling the kit lens and getting another one. The 50mm F1.8 is also one of the other must-have at $100+ i read. |

Having said that, if you're very unsure about what to get in place of the kit lens, it doesn't hurt to just stick to the kit lens for now. You don't lose out THAT much, considering how cheap it is and how expensive many lens can cost. You earn back by being able to start shooting earlier! And then maybe you'll get a better idea of your shooting style and then you can get the lens that suits you best!
