Default Clothes pegs - g1 vs m8

i was curious if the same lens on different bodies yielded different results...
so here goes:

shots taken with m8 cropped to near similar to g1
shots taken with same lens seconds apart
all at iso 100-160
taken at same f stops.
using neutral party lens -- hexanon.

special thanks to chiff for lending his g1 and his clothes pegs

wonder if anyone can really tell the difference?

starting with Hexanon 50mm at f2:

Wah... a $600 cam against a $5000 goliath !

My choice : 1st pic from M8. 2nd from G1 I see 5 areas where both differ.

perhaps u can resize pics smaller for easier comparison.

The first pic can see the details in the blue underwear. The bokeh is also creamy smooth. The second pic in focus areas have less details and the OOF area looks blotchy.

i would also guess 1st G1 and second m8.

as you are using the same lens, it's not really the optical signitures to look out for, but the sensor.

details - pixel density 2x crop vs 1.33x crop
colour - i can't say too much as i'm not that familiar with the lumix sensor, but the 1st one looks a little more saturated
iso - 100 vs 160, not sure if it was my imgination, but the bg of the 2nd looked a tad brighter...

the fun continues... (maybe i should take the answers to my grave )

now with hexanon-uc 35mm at f2
both images converted to b&w using simple gradient map technique... minimal exposure tweaking.

m8 image cropped closer to g1 image.
all shots are unsharpend jpeg shots.

by the way, my wife who does not know how to use anything more than a compact camera has got BOTH answers correct at first try within 5 mins..
(maybe all it takes is to sit back and scroll up/down) ..
i posted them in large sizes for a reason

B&W. 1st is M8. 2nd is G1.

You have a sharp wife. She probably smell something now that you're involved in someone else's underwear !

for the B & W, first one G1 and second M8. Cos the second, wasn't cropped properly(look and compare at the clothes peg on the far left). Got tempted and get the G1 earlier on too...:-)

my guess for the b&w is that the first one is the G1 and second from the m8, same as the colour test shots.

but i think that comparing digital camera signatures is way less interesting than comparing lens signatures... but that's just me...

hee hee...

This is fun... I think the point is not to spot which is which... Never knew G1 can create so much fun also... Maybe we can try a M8, RD-1, G1 test... Then I put up more undies for test shot... hahahahaha....

Nonsense aside...

Colour one: 1st pic is G1, 2nd one is M8.
Reason: The details on my socks peg by the blue cloth peg is higher on the second picture. Reason being that M8 has a bigger sensor, hence it can resolve much more details than the G1 4/3 small sensor. [I actually spot the difference from my E71 mobile phone LCD screen... didn't have a computer to see the difference at my mum's place. ]

B&W one: 1st pic is M8, 2nd one is G1.
Reason: The tone of the undies peg by the center clothe peg is deeper. Simply more depth. Also more detail compare to the second one below. The threads on it is more define for the first pic.

Both M8 and G1 are exceptional cameras. Actually the shutter sound is pretty similar for my ears (I'm actually partially deaf, so I can't tell much difference between the two). Without the mirror flap, shooting at 1/8s is easier on this little G1.

Well, I can't say that it's like RF this and RF that... the point is not to compare with RF, film or M8. The point is... this is a fun little camera to use with ALL the Leica screw mount & Bayonet M mount lenses! Leica no longer has the monopoly. This will open new opportunity for all the old lenses with weird mount to be mounted on a digital body.

So, should you wait for a oly or just go and buy a G1... well... it really depends on how long you can hold on to that urge....

Having heard so much good things about G1... here is my take on the cons...

I don't like the ergonomics of it. That's me. Being an old school film user, I really didn't like the grip. I couldn't stand the ergonomics of the canon & nikon entry level bodies grip and this one is just styled like that. I would prefer the grip to be either smaller or totally no grip at all on the front. Just like the Leica M or the Bessa series. But somehow, they have to cater for the mass consumer and design the camera to be close to a DSLR so that it would not look so radical.

The body is just too thick. Maybe because to house all the electronics and the swivel screen. Maybe as months go by, with better processor and battery, they are able to shrink the real estate of the camera. The material of the body is pretty nice to feel. When I first touched the demo unit last November, I didn't really like it. But now, I feel that it feels like the Bessa matt black series (R2A, R3A, R4A). I grow to like it.

Having said all these, I am not a digital person, hence all the features & ergonomics I want to see on a camera should actually style after a Leica M or Bessa or RD-1. That is why I rate the ergonomics of RD-1 so highly.

I would say... if the firmware, LCD screen, sensor were to port over to the RD-1 body, using RD-1 shutter speed controls and the analog top dials (minus the left rewind dial). This will be the PERFECT camera for me.....

Anyway, that's not really possible. Younger generation photographers would find the the RD-1 body too radical. Just a dream, Now, have to live with this cute little G1 and hopefully the G2 will be smaller in size and... with a larger sensor.

the benefits of a larger sensor is usually in the form of it's ability to handle low light better, as the photodiodes can afford to larger to capture more light information. e.g. of the D700 vs D300 or the 5D vs 50D... but this does not nec apply to the M8 as the digital noise is already pretty bad at iso640
Thanks for the clarification... as u know... I am a total idiot in digital photography...

I'll go back and shoot film after this fever dies down...

hahaha... no, no... it's just a little different from film, where the larger your format, the more information you capture.

anyway, didn't mean to digress too far from the thread topic.

i decided not to post the pics taken with hexanon 90mm, as i realised the g1 had an advantage in this category (the accuracy of focusing g1 at 90mm beats the m8 simply because the view was larger)..

i started this wondering if g1 might alter the lens signature that much because of a different sensor. but looks like that's not too obvious at all as can be seen..

details in m8 do seem to be better defined and perhaps with better depth, despite only at 10 megapix. but at a glance, really quite difficult to spot obvious differences.

i gave the g1 a slight exposure advantage in both shots , just to confuse things abit..

my personal conclusion: i am happy to say that the g1 is a good 'stunt-double' for my m8 any day.... and good 'stunt-doubles' are just so hard to find , especially such a potentially versatile one.

and in the mood of the day...
the 'OSCAR' (taken with g1 using nokton 40 mm sc at f1.4)

goes to ..... CHIIF! for getting both answers correct.
looks like he who wears those underwears knows best !

ANSWER:
Colour one: 1st pic is G1, 2nd one is M8.
B&W one: 1st pic is M8, 2nd one is G1.
