Hie there,

Some of the shots were well panned. However, I felt the subject lacks contrast. Flash usage would be useful. Not sure if u used it.

thanks for the pointer - not that i didn't want to use flash, but due to the consistently drippy weather (it was still drizzling on/off) and that i lack of an external flash - i decided to forgo flash altogether, save for maybe 3 shots. thanks again for popping a look!

Hi Sehsuan,

Good shots there, well executed. I agree with marcwang that the shots looks flat, for the lack of flash to bring out the details and color of the subject. It's a pity. Should seriously consider to get a flash.

Cheers

Nice shots sehsuan.... mine turned out not as good... maybe becoz I didn't put on a wide and the space was really limited.

On the use of flash... these riders were going at the logs at high speed, the flash would have distracted them and likely cause an accident. The path itself was already very slippery becoz of the rain and mud... (heh! one of them skidded and crashed into me... luckily my camera was safe).

In all, hot, humid, bad lighting in the thick foliage, wet, muddy and mosquitoes! Not the ideal shooting situation... plus the long hike... man... my legs were aching after that. We were both pretty muddy after the whole event.

yes indeed, using the flash did come across my mind, especially since it can help out with the panning shots with slow shutter speed - but i was concerned if it would distract them and cause them to crash into me.

the fun part about the shoot was that i could put my saf boots to good use for trekking (sort of?) into the race route and shoot while getting myself dirty. also of highlight, was how me and another friend of mine, how we torn up a clear plastic poncho to use as a rain hood for both of us while i continued to shoot... FUN!

once again, thanks for the comments and compliments, especially from Mr Chng.

Sehsuan,

The subjects are too blurred to be considered a well panned shot, but not blurred enough for one of those messy/mood shots due to the fact that you did not have a ext. flash for rear curtain synch! Since you don't have a ext. flash, I would suggest that you go for the former. The subject looks under wxposed as well, did you compensate?

dirtbiker: i would like to try out other sections of the course, but with the 1 minute intervals the riders are sent out, i'm not sure if i have the luxury of 1 minute running against the direction of the riders, jumping off the track, prepping my camera, just to shoot. did you shoot that day? i did hear one of the other helpers calling out the name "irfan"... was that you? or are you irfan? i'm confused...

zeuss, flash ar, slowly lor. really, i was worried if any of the riders come and crash happily into me after a bounce flash shot. the conditions weren't that conducive to the riders, and with a flash i'm afraid i'd be killing them.

btw, which is the "former" you're talking about? can't seem to pull out a former/latter from your sentence... actually, i purposely underexposed by 1/3 stop...

I got as far as Changi Point, then the skies opened up, so I had some nasi lemak and went home.

Wouldn't want to risk the health of my equipment by exposing them to inclement conditions, especially when I am not some sponsored National Geographic photographer with weather-sealed equipment!

But well, shooting in the jungle's always difficult with the low light and high shutter speeds required.

r32, it's a little pity that you didn't go in - it was probably a "fast and furious" in the forest

in reality, i learnt five big things that day:
1) listen to Dad and bring along a disposable poncho
2) get a good friend (Gary) to help you to tie the disposable poncho into two and tie it for rainfall shelter
3) wear jeans and army boots - i'm sure glad that i wore that to shoot
4) get insect repellent - we're human magnets while we're in the forest

AND

5) don't stand too close to the riders at the obstacles should they "buang" - had a couple of close shaves already
