Default Night Shots around City Hall

Hi all

I'm kinda new to this, and had my first attempts at night shots. The only PP i did was adjusting white balance on a couple of the photos. C & C will be appreciated, thanks!

Do let me me know where and how I can improve on my shots. Thanks!

hi TS...i'm a beginner to dslr as well.
IMO...white balance is out for #2 and #3.
whole set appears to be abit on the soft side as well.
hope it helps.

hi thanks for your comments! ... made some WB adjustments to #2 because the original colour turned out really dull and overexposed at the merlion. maybe overdid it a little ...

as for the issue of soft, do you have suggestion on how i can go about this problem? i had most of these shots stopped from at least f11 to f18 already, trying to get the maximum sharpness. is the problem due to lenses? im using a kit 18-55 ...

thanks!

Kit lens are more than enough. Increase a little contrast, if you shoot in raw mode, increase a little clarity in photoshop, you might want try to recover a little too. As comment at the other thread, you shoot at wrong timing.

1 things i realize that your lens is 18mm, are you shooting in 18mm? seem not wide enough..

hi there, thanks for your PP tips. i know i can get alot of variations to my photos with PP, but i was wondering more of ensuring sharpness from my camera shots before PP. is there a way i can go about to ensure sharper shots?

number 1 and 3 were at 18mm. with 1.6 crop, its also less wide. i know composition got cut off here and there but i was trying my best to fit in the flyer and esplanade open stage for 1, and the old and new supreme courts for 3. would have been nice to have a ultra-wide lense at that time

Things you can try if you're not doing it already:
1. Tripod
2. Remote shutter release
3. The mirror up function
4. Stop down to f/8 or f/11
5. Reduce ISO (camera's in-built noise reduction may actually make your photos less sharp at high ISO)

your picture looks sharp enough for me, PP a little will do. shoot with F8 is just to have max sharpness at the corner, center doesn't make much different at infinity. Seem like 18mm are just not enough for C user.

oh, i just realised that my lense is most sharp at f8-f11. i initially thought that stopping down to like f18 or f22 will give me more sharpness, only to realise now that it would actually cause diffraction.

is there a big difference actually, if i compare f8 to lets say f16? will my pictures be significantly sharper? thanks.

i believe every lens would have their unique F value whereby it will produce a sharpest image.
if i am not mistaken...kit lens should be sharpest at ard F8. read it somewhere.
maybe some CSer can enlighten us on this?

for sharpness, could it be that the sharpness is lost when u uploaded it online?

Technicals aside, best time to take night shots around the CBD area would be weekdays. The office lights are kept off during the weekends.
