Firstly, before buying anything, have a sense of the budget and the type of machine you are looking for. The type will depend mostly on your primary usage of the machine. You can actually buy them from anywhere if you know exactly what you want. Sometimes, going to IT shows is a waste of time because not all the stuff going on sale there are actually worth buying. The worse is to fight your way through the crowded area.

For desktop PCs, a good alternative is to surf Dell's site and order direct from them. I have helped my relatives by ordering through Dell and their machines are pretty decent. After sales service is not too shabby either. I have no knowledge or experience with other computer makers. I heard a lot of them suck. However, nothing beats to DIY your own by getting the best parts at Sim Lim Square. Some may find that time consuming and a hassle but your mileage may vary.

Oh, have you considered getting a Mac instead? Having less choices doesn't necessarily means a bad thing. It gives you a much easier time choosing the right machine for you. LOL! Hope that helps. Cheers!

Then get a quad core system with a mid-high end graphics card.

Not forgetting RAM and storage capacity as well. Check out Acer. Very cheap and powerful.

hmm.. then best is build ur own system. i get by with a dell after upping the RAM. but since it comes with a built-in graphics card, i can't really play the latest games on it. for photoshop, still ok.
