Nice shots but you only take the head of the dragonfly? If you don't zoom in totally, you should be able to get the whole dragonfly in view.

Hi bro, by shifting your position and taking the pic at different angles, you can get the whole dragonfly in the pic. Of course, you cannot take the pic at full zoom probably ard 6-8X zoom should be ok for a reasonably sized dragonfly.

The two pics below were taken with my S3 + DCR250 at SBG.

You can get that close to dragonfly/fly with raynox 250? I think I might have to pull mine out of the dry cabinet for another play with it.

Hi TroyP, the below 2 pics are shots of the dragonfly at 12X zoom using my Canon S3. Images as it is without any cropping so you can see how close I can actually get to the dragonfly.

With the SX10, I think it will be much closer since it has 20X zoom compared to my 12X zoom.

S3 only has onboard flash. Using a DIY diffuser made using a Myojo instant noodle bowl...

If using 100+ shutter speed, pic is dark, then check ur external flash settings. Are you taking at full power or reduced power? Try to adjust your flash power, failing which adjust your exposure compensation to +1 ev thereabouts and see whether your pic becomes brighter.

Cup noodle too small already. Must be Myojo bowl noodles. And bowl must be styrofoam. Made another one today using Koka styrofoam bowl which is smaller than the Myojo bowl but found that it was less effective.

Another thing did you set your flash curtain to second curtain??? Second curtain is typically used when you want to use your flash as a fill in flash.

For my S3, I have a lens adaptor so I slide it over the lens adaptor... And then push it against the Raynox adaptor...

You have to cut a hole in the centre of the styrofoam bowl and it must fit tightly over the lens...If you cut wrongly and the hole is too big, you will either have to eat another bowl of instant noodles or use paper to stick around the hole to get it to have a tight fit over your lens.

What system are you using right now and what lenses do you have?

3rd party macro lens you can consider would be Tamron 90f2.8 or the Sigma 105f2.8.

Otherwise if you have a zoom lens ~100mm and longer then you can consider getting the Raynox DCR250 and attach it to your zoom lens as a cheaper alternative to getting a dedicated macro lens.

Goos places for macro would be AP, SBG, Venus Drive, AHBT etc.
