Not necessary to go studio for photo taking for your baby, you can take your own camera to do all the snap snap.

The pictures by the photographer your wife likes not only takes the pictures, but there is a fair amount of post-processing done to the pictures... so it would not be that straight forward to duplicate that kind of look. However, it is not impossible to do something like that at home.

Below is a picture done my fren and she did it at home. She has an orange wall, and took her baby with that backdrop, and put a few of the pictures together...

With a little skill with photography and post-processing... and some creativity... you can do interesting stuff

The best and most priceless kids photos are the ones that you have taken yourself. You will always remember the moment your baby smile for you. That moment is priceless.

If you don't put your DSLR to good use now, I can't think of a better time to use it

Here are a few articles to help you out.

You would preferably have a bounced/diffused light source (ie. off camera flash bounced by umbrella or white wall is fine). No direct flash, since its bounced and also at 45deg angle.

I tried this out based on the articles and got modest results, but I am happy, since I got good picts (for my standards anyway), did them myself (what better labor of love), and got to learn more on photography.
Simple PP done using Picasa only (ie. just click button )

I do agree with pinholecam.Sometimes you don't to wait to look for a Pro photographer to take your baby pictures. If happen to saw some movement which you think it nice and pretty. Why not.Go ahead with your DSLR if not you would miss this chances.

This is how I took my son pictures the house using my own DLSR
