Ahhh... finally some butts.
![]() First shot is the Pea Blue (Lampides boeticus). This one looks like it's lost its tails. Second shot is of one of those many lookalike skippers from the genus Potanthus. This looks like a Lesser Dart. Yes, the third shot is of a colourful day-flying moth, Utetheisa lotrix. You can read more about it here, courtesy of Dr Roger Kendrick. The fourth shot is a female Plain Tiger trying to lay eggs on the flower of its host plant. The final shot is a male Striped Albatross. Good attempts, Redsun. Shooting butts not as easy as it looks eh? ![]() |

hi redsun,
good attempts! Looks like you have plenty of shots of the butts in action. As i dont normally shoot at such a high shutter speed unless given the right conditions, i will wait for the butterfly to stop on a perch before shooting. being critical, a tighter horizontal crop of the striped albatross would make the overall image better. |

Some butterflies are dimorphic, so it would be easier to recognise which is a male or female.
the striped albatross is quite a good example, the males are white and while the females may look like another species to some people.... Well, as Bluesteel aka Sunny always say, a picture is worth a thousand words: ![]() |

In the case of these two species, there are clear differences. The male Plain Tiger has an extra black "spot" on the hindwing, whilst the female Striped Albatross looks totally different from the male. Sorry for hijacking your thread, but here are two shots to illustrate. Look carefully at your Plain Tiger, and this shot of the male. See the extra white-centred black spot on the hindwing? ![]() As for the Striped Albatross, here's a shot where the male and female butts are feeding. The difference between the two is quite distinct. ![]() |

hehehe... chase them around loh.. they are probably in their feeding frenzy or some sort... just follow one pristine specimen and im sure it would land around the area for you to shoot :P especially the lemon grass areas near the foot of the hill.

You chose one of the skittiest butts to shoot. So you can give yourself a pat on the back that you even got this one on the flower. Like you said, they give you very little time to compose, focus and shoot. It'll be the same if you tried to shoot the common "Grass Yellows" that are flying around. They may be common, but very hard to nail a good shot.
