I have not been to Japan. So can't comment. But, why don't ask your gfs to bring along some things for you so you could bring along all you want.

    Just some idea.

Not sure if Tokyo Tsukiji fish market is still open to public. If it is, you should definitely make a trip. Lighting is a bit dim so you need fast lens or good use of flash.

    Enjoy your trip.

    Cheers,

Bring tripod or else most of your pics will mostly be missing you and there goes your memories of Japan. I suggest u carry light as you dun wanna hv bad memory of the trip with the 'sufferings' you have of lugging things here & there ... big & heavy packs on walks no freedom de. Imagine all small packs but you carrying 'luggage' here & there. Crowds are norms in places like Shibuya ... can't really move freely if you have big & heavy stuffs. I just packed body + 18-200 for street photography when I'm there ... IMHO ya

    just go with light......
if not your GF will not very happy with you...
and your trip will be a nightmare.......

Just enjoy your trip with your GF....
if have time take more pix of both of you more instead....
That is the meaning of traveling together with your love one......

Tokyo Tsukiji fish market is now open for public now, but soon they will moving to another location. but that still unknow when....

Just bring along a tripod, if you planning to got for night shot....or you already plan to visit the night spot.

if not just keep your tripod in the hotel room...if you are not using it...

one more thing... you did mentiond you will be going for hiking?? where?? how long the hike will be???

The last time I hike about 5hrs... carry back pack with my tripod and camera with lens...
and that really kill my back....

    now a day I only bring along 24-105mm, 10-22mm and 50mm.
is good enough for most of the shots in japan...

one last advice... please ask ppl before taking pix....

If you want to see more of japan.. just do a search....

Wow! You are so lucky! I won't want to lug a tripod especially when I have a bulky one! My camera bag would be a pretty good support.

travel as light as you can, cuz along the way there's just a tendency to buy things.. my guide line is going over with 70% luggage full, and i usually come back from anywhere with 120%.. and loads of handcarry onboard...
    pedantic.

Get a Gitzo 1541T tripod bah. Can tuck it into a big haversack. I use a Crumpler Karachi Outpost, can carry all my camera equipment, including tripod (all inside) and still some spare space for additional travel items/sovenirs.
I say the lens is the soul of a camera. What about the body? Well, it's just the body...
