Default Lens for 300D?

hello...if i want to buy 300D without the standard lens (since the lens kit is out of stock at present), what would you recommend in replacement of the 18-55mm lens that can allow me to shoot under "normal" circumstances (eg street shots)? Budget is $200. Possible?

There is only one lens which comes to mind that fits your requirements. And that is the EF 50mm f1.8 Mk II. ~$140 brand new, used at abt $100-$110.

suggest to get the 18-55mm from Caspere you won't be able to get any other lens <$200 that is as wide as the 18-55.

Hi Mpenza, what is the largest aperture for the 18-55mm lens?

Hi bubblegumz, the EF 50mm f1.8 Mk II sound good to me for the f1.8. You can always get the 18-55mm lens later when someone sell it or get new one when stock come in. That is, if you plan to have more than one lens. Just my 2 cents thot, don't have a dSLR anyway.

50mm will become effectively a telepoto (80mm) after taking into account the 1.6x cropping factor.

max aperture is f3.5-5.6

the 18-55 is worth the ~$200 extra
you won't find another zoom with <20mm anywhere near this price
somemore it only comes with 300D and you cannot buy it separately elsewhere, so if you buy 300D without the ef-s lens and regret later you will have to wait until someone happens to sell it.

PS: I bought 300D with the Lens, and bought the 50 1.8 a few days later

The EF-S kit lens is very good. It would be a waste not to get the kit.

By the way bubblegumz, be prepared to buy more storage too!

I have 2 x 256mb CFs, 1 x 128Mb CF... But wished for the convenience of at least 1 x 512Mb CF. So used to at least getting 60 shots off each 256Mb card on my G3 previously (in RAW mode) that I find it a hassle to change card after 30+ shots on the 300D (in RAW as well).

Thankfully, I still have an option of using an X-drive on the road. Just added another 40Gb external harddisk to my PC for more storage.

Overseas? I think she will kena worse luck. By the time she successfully finds one and the lens is parcelled over, new stocks might have arrived liow. And she ends up paying a premium for the shipping somemore.

Anyway, can understand why Bubblegumz is fed up lah. AP keeps telling her coming in a couple of days, but shipment keeps getting delayed. Our practical lesson (shoot) coming up this Saturday somemore. If someone from Clubsnap can loan her a 300D or any other good digicam, then she won't need to be so kancheong and die die need to get the cam by this week liow loh.

Loupgarou, you got any to loan?
