i'd recommend Final Cut Express or Avid Express.

The easiest software would be imovie 08, but it only comes with a mac

The equivalent or imovie for the Win platform is Adobe Premiere Elements. Handles practical any format including AVCHD and MPEG-4

For those who are very lazy and want to totally automate the editing process, use muvee autoProducer. Amazing **** in under 5 minutes!!!

Just use windows movie maker!

It's free and it's easy to use. Should be able to satisfy your requirements from what you have stated.

If's it's just a simple video i don't see why you will want to go through a learning curve with the other professional editing software.

Go play with it Window movie maker bah. Its like everywhere.

if you are new to editing, windows movie maker is the best free software to learn. after that, you can move on to premiere, vegas or even FCP. All these s/w will cost money though.

I usually use Final Cut Pro for that (I'm also a fan/sucker for making videos out of photos hahahah)

Personally i felt more comfortable working in FCP as compared to iMovie. I don't know why but FCP is more user friendly.

After trying Magix 14 Pro Plus (trial), 15 Pro (bought - takes some getting used to), 15 Pro Plus (trial), Adobe Premiere Elements 7 (trial)
They try to do too much "features" and seem (to me) clogged up, slow and plodding.

Saw some other software like Power Director, Corel Video Studio X2, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate.....in software shop.

Found that for my entry level needs, Windows Movie Maker (free), VirtualDub (free) and Cyberlink Power Producer (came free bundled with my hardware LG DVD drive purchase) were good and no need for ridiculous long waiting times (Magix Pro 15) for it to do a simple thing like burn short movie to DVD.

The free and simple software are good, fast and easy to use.

Final cut and Adobe Premiere might to be expensive and not required for what you want. On the other hand Windows Movie Maker is too poor. You might want to look at applications in between, such as Pinnacle or Corel video studio (formely know as Ulead)
Magix does a good job too, they often praise their dual-view feature, should you require that.

If AVCHD .MTS files, simplest to use would Pinnacle. If more traditional DV then just about anything works.
