Those using the electronic sensors need the aperture to be locked at the minimum like how the G lenses are. From there, it's opened up to the max using the aperture lever and worked using only the lever.

If the aperture is not locked down at the minimum, this electronic sensor can't work properly.

Sorry forgot to mention that it's the newer cameras which requires this. The older manual ones can work with the aperture ring (such as the F90x)

just set it to the minimum aperture will do, lock or not lock is fine,
if you don't lock it, it might turn it to other aperture accidentally, causing camera to show ERR.

You have to set to the minimun aperture f22 and lock it, if not the lens will not work.
"FEE" error will appear on your top LCD screen.
Read the f1.8 manual and you will get it.

Minimum aperture lock (Fig. A)
For programmed auto or shutter-priority auto exposure shooting, use the minimum aperture lock
lever to lock the lens aperture at f/22.
1 Set the lens to its minimum aperture (f/22) by aligning it with the aperture index.
2 Slide the lock lever toward the aperture ring, so the two orange dots are aligned.
To release the lock, slide the lever in the opposite direction.

so, do i need to set if i am using aperture prioity mode?

Yes, be it aperture/shutter/manual mode, need to set to f22.

You can try setting to other f values to see, your D90 will not work.
Just set to f22, and use your camera to adjust the aperture value.

Good for you that you got your 50/1.8 before the price hike..

I'm considering the new 35/1.8 which will operate more like a 50 on my D200. =)

yea, the 35 would be a lot more versatile than my 50/1.8 cos of the wider angle... i did consider that, but it was more expensive... so settle for the 50mm instead...

and yes, before the hike, haha, but the 50mm like increase 20 dollars?
wonder how much the 70-300 is now, haha, but thank god, i bought it before the hike

Remember, as long as the lens has a aperture ring, you need to set it to the smallest aperture in order to work.
