Default Compact/light telezoom?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if there're any zooms that reach into the 300mm range, but are compact and light, or just compact, or light? Don't really want G lenses but suggest anyway. Don't really want DX lenses, but likewise, suggest anyway.

I currently have the old AF 75-300 f4.5-5.6, and though I know this lens is heavy before I bought it, I bought it anyway. Haha! Now I'm thinking maybe I would want something light and compact that reaches into the 300mm range, if that exists. Doesn't have to be Nikon brand.

I have a feeling there wouldn't be though. =) Super-tele and light and compact just doesn't seem to go. =)

Cheers!

You won't find a very compact zoom lens that reaches to 300mm, basically because it is 300mm... so it needs to be longer than zooms like the 18-55.

If you do not like DX lenses, then the 70-300 VR lens would be it

Your AF 75-300 weighs about 850g, min length about 165mm
The revised AF 70-300mm weighs 425g, min length 116.5mm
The newer AFS 70-300 VR weighs 745g , min length about 143.5mm

Would this fit your bill ?

It's an older Nikon lens. =)

I was afraid of that...

Wow! I didn't know I'm lugging close to 1kg extra when I bring out my 75-300. Damn. The 425g 70-300 you're referring to is the G lens right? Or the D lens with the aperture ring? I have a friend who has the G one... maybe I should compare mine with hers...

The VR version is out for now. No money.

Anymore suggestions? What does a 100-300 look like and how does it weigh?

Another alternative is if I lower my 300mm "requirement" to say 200mm...? 18-200 comes to mind but as far as I know, they're all G designs.

I was referring to the G version. The non G weighs slightly more.

The AFS VR 18-200mm should be more expensive than the AFS VR 70-300mm

If you lower to 200mm, then the most compact one would be the 55-200mm lens, but it is a DX lens. DX lenses would generally be smaller than FX lenses.
