Bro, it cost me $850 two months ago. If I were to go FF, this would be the lens on my F700 most of the time.

I used it to take a number of shots for a grooming event today. I am still loving it.

Hi, u refering to the latest G lens? Becos intend to get the Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.4 G lens but today happened to read these tread, so i went thru the all the pages and got so many nice reviews from you pro regarding Sigma 50mm f1.4 HSM.

So, want to know whether the newest Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.4 G lens is better or Sigma 50mm f1.4 HSM, as i check the price, Nikon is $30 more than Sigma. Wanted to get a prime lens incorporate with soon-to-get D700.

Performs well under low lighting condition indoors without flash.

When I bot my copy, I bot it at 100 above 1.4G (before Nikon up their prices) and I tot its a price I am willing to pay given how well Sigma performs. Now, Sigma 50 is even cheaper than 1.4G, I think there's no hesitation at all. Sigma 50mm f1.4 in my opinion is better than 1.4G tho its heavier.

The Sigma 50mm f1.4 is significantly better in terms of bokeh effect, which is my main reason for spending good money in buying such a fast lens anyway.

IMHO, this Sigma & almost all others won't be sharp @ wide open but sometimes you want that soft look. I've tested Nikon's D1.8, D1.4 & Carl Zeiss 1.4 @ wide open on the same subject (product) then close them step by step. Unfortunately, I haven't compared the colours on human. Most sharpness occur @ above F2 & I normally shoot @ 2 or 2.8 with 1.8 in dark areas. This lens is on my D700 most of the time as it exhibits great contrast, colours & depth compared to my other Zoom lenses. Well, it's a prime and I like it because I can share the 77mm filters with other lenses & it comes with a nice hood + good build quality.

I even used liquid paper to mark a stroke on the mounting point so that I can see when to pop the lens in dark areas. My only compliant is I sometimes push it to manual accidentally as the button is located where your thumb rests.

For long travels, I may just pop the 1.4D as it's much smaller & lighter.

Sorry, I have no experience with Canon but buy what you feel comfortable with & do check even when new. I spotted a dust in the 1st new lens & exchanged it FOC.

so it is quite true that sigma's production lines tend to be a bit lax on QC? or was it warehousing problem where environmental control is concerned?

    Hi Abun83,

When I bought my Canon 50mm f/1.4, the Sigma was just launched. From the reviews that I've read then, the Sigma was better but I went for the Canon as it was about $200 cheaper then. Here's a shot I took yesterday with the lens, f stop was at f/2 (if I recall correctly).

nice set man. i've been debating with myself about whether to buy a canon 50mm f/1.4 or a sigma 50mm f/1.4 for the longest time already. and it seems like seeing this set of photos totally made the decision for me. thanks man!

Had an opportunity to do a portrait shot today.

Here's one with Sigma. Very pleased with it.
