Default Taking Macro shots on S5pro, Extension Tube or Teleconverter

Hi Guys, Newbie here needs advise on which is a better recommendation for taking macro shots, Extension Tube or Teleconverter? Thinking to use my nikkon 105mm AIS with either of the suggested. Please advise if I'm getting it all wrong. Thanks in advance.

extension tube = no quality lost compare to teleconverter.

A teleconverter just multiplies the focal length. It has nothing to do with macro photography.

Based on my experience, it is better to use an extension bellow than an extension tube.

Yes, you will need a Nikon mount bellow. A brand new Nikon PB-6 sells for about $600. A used one will probably costs about $300.

that is an extension tube. not bellows.

if you're using an af lens and you want to use the af function, make sure the tube supports it. most cheap tubes needs manual focusing. one more thing some does not support nikon af g lens due to no aperture coupling on the lens.

my $1 worth.

No, that is an extension tube.

A Nikon PB-6 bellow looks like this:

In most cases, having manual focus is good enough for macro photography.

...pls excuse my ignorance but does'nt the bellows and extension tube work on the same principle or at least produce the same result ie to do macro shots?. Bellows as i see it is more convenient as you turn the knob to get the lens closer or farther from subject whereas using extension tube you have to move forward or backward to get closer or farther from subject, no? I have no experienxe using either. If the extension tube produces same result then I might go for it as it's cheaper, just to play, play with macro.

Yes, both bellow and tube work on the same principles. As you already had mentioned, one can turn the knob to move the lens closer or away from the subject. Therefore, the magnification is better and the rig is more stable too. When taking a macro shot, slight vibration can cause drastic loss in sharpness.

The cheapest way to 'play' macro photography is to reverse mount a 50mm or 105mm lens (manual focus only). All you need is a reverse mount attachment (available from Orient Photo, TCW, Alex Photo and P&G). The total cost for such a setup is usually less than S$20 (excluding lens, of course).

This is 'photobum'.

Somebody PMed me last week about his interest to view and purchase the Nikon PK-13 extension tube. Since I was deregistered on Wednesday, all my PMs were gone forever. Can that person please PM me again with your contact information? Thank you.
