Actually I wonder whether Nikkor 55-200mm is a good lens for shooting birds. Currently, I cannot afford 70-200mm. Any opinion from experts here? Thanks.

bigbird will tell you it's too short unless the BIG BIRD is very near you.

Can explore Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM or Sigma APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens ... looks good for birdie shots from reviews.

Jacob,

I think I had mentioned to you before that a bird-shooting friend of mine uses a Sigma 150-500mm, together with a Sigma 2X teleconverter (strangely it operates in manual focus only) as his primary lens. The extended focal length comes to 1500mm on a DX camera body.

Can shoot Small Bird (younger brother of Big Bird) liao.

tried a few times with a 70-300 VR. Found that i got no talent.

I think a longer than 300mm lens will be gd. However, i do think the 70-300 VR is a gd start. Not very expensive and it can produce pretty nice results.

I do have a friend who use mirror lenses (500mm+++) for birding. I can't appreciate the manual focus and funny bokeh.

mirror lens bokeh really irritating. that's why i'm not keen in them although they are pretty low in price.

Started off bird photography with a S2 Pro. But subsequently changed to Nikon.

I was poison then when some one lend me feel his D1x and that's where I felt the difference in focusing speed and shooting speed. While the color is good it, the ability to lock on focus fast and shoot faster was something my S2 pro could not do it fast compared to the D1x then (D1x just make things easier not that Fuji S2 pro cannot do what D1x can do).

Having said that, I enjoy have the S2 pro and also Fuji services, the camera S2 can deliver good images and it did give me some good images like these:

White Bellied Sea Eagle scratching its head ....

A White Shouldered Kite irritated by some crows

Crimson Sunbird at SBG

These 2 were part of the series I love most taken at Botanical Gardens

Anyway those were the days, I am no more bird siao already
