Go out and do something about it if you care enough. I have given the shirt off my back more times then I care to recall (some regretfully) and now gave the best years of my life and everything I have to a company that is screwing me royally..but that has not stopped me from doing the right thing and in recent months helped a few of my junior staffers out and make them better workers to move on. You can talk about it all day and night here or you can go do something about it after all the talking is done. Problem is..I see very little people doing just that...so if I hardly see any daily life around me that means there is MORE WORK to be done by all here. How about making a list here of every good anyone and everyone do and mark it here by stating it here for all to see. Let's see how much we can build up to inspire more to join in? Not asking for 3 good deeds...just one a day? Any takers?
    well said..

A very positive approach and executable idea.
It's relevant to the theme of this thread.
When people don't know how to love one another
there is no way for them to change the world.

So they have to learn to set an example of
being warm, friendly and loving every person
in this world instead of harbouring hatred and jealousy,
    deceiving and cheating one another.

You are great and you are the best.
I would like to meet people with such a vision.

Hahaha - you've upped the stakes!

Making a difference to our environment, yes - I'm in! To strive for at least one a day! Are you in Uncle Sam?....anyone else?

Wanna share with you a buddhist monk, Pawo, in his 60s who has become a friend:

In short, he's been taken to many places. In Ethopia, he found a shamble of a school and decided that upon his return to England he would raise money to help them build a proper school. So he got a bucket and stood outside a supermarket. His robes were pretty much rags and his shoes in tatters. My friend who saw him said:
"Why don't you take some of the money that has been donated to buy yourself a pair of shoes."

His reply: "I will not take any money from this bucket, it is all for the children. Their need is greater than mine"

My friend went and bought him a pair of shoes.......and blah blah blah........a charity is started up and thru a couple of music scores the funds are raised for the school.....and not only that, this monk has touched so many people's lives that he has been given a mansion and an animal sanctuary.

His philosophy for his charity is that 100% of what is given goes towards the children's development.

If you're happy with what you see and hear then you need do nothing.......if not then is it possible to do something collectively to change what we see and hear?

This recession may be over in a blink of an eye but whilst we are being bombarded with information about how bad things are and how much worst things are going to be, let's not dwell and worry about things that we do not have control over.

It would be great if we could focus on the things we can do something about and create a cushion effect for those who are affected.

Talking about things is also good, one idea spins off another idea....etc

.....then of course putting an idea into action

That last part... I give it 1:100 chance any action will take place. Also for this to happen during a down turn is not going to happen. Not as I see it. Sure they will feel something now, the times are tough and they see or can relate to it and maybe the fear it might also happen to them. But if your tummy is groaning from not having enough to eat or feed your family or anything that is causing discomfort to them in their own home boundary.. most will tell you "Charity begins at home" In the good times most will be too happy living it up to care or already too greatful that the bad times are over for them...time to make up for lost time and have fun. The only real charity anyone is willing to do and we have seen it happen time and time again.. just donate money. Let someone else volunteer their time. I am sure there will be the tiniest of minority that will come forth to help...usually the profile of those are the non-mover or shakers from the pillar of society. What you have are the humble and quiet few who do it quietly by the side and out of sight. How do you profile the loud and the charitable few? hardly any as that profile combination is so damn rare...even here!.

So..for me. Google is my friend.. I want help or find ways to help I get more solutions or ideas out there already. Alot are out there for the picking without having to start a discussion over it. I will do what I can. I will stand up and do it but I am not wanting to stand up and be counted. We have too many politician and even normal people doing just that. Be counted...to seem like doing something but not. And sometime you also need to be careful who you help as sometime help can end up casuing problems too so being too overly idealist can be a bad thing too and open to abuse. I have seen alot of that. For everyone I managed to help in some small or big way, I get more then 20 regrets. Think those odds are even higher now personally. I rather go help some village in some far away land where you know they really have no help at all...those I know will take what you can give and made meaningful use of it then those I see locally who take friendship for kindness........and worst...weakness. As I said..I am still willing to help...I am just more selective and so should others here too. There are alot of KNF case out there big and small and some of them can come in the form of just a so called friend or a loved one or even your own child.

I have added one more consideration to my mean of helping people and that is at times I help by simply not doing anything. As the saying goes " Something you have to be cruel to be kind"

So does this mean you stop helping to save yourself? No you don't you keep helping where you can only in doing so you can have better experience in spotting the real from the abusers. So start small if you have to BUT START!~ Enough talking.....at least from me lah.

So but really.....You have got to be kidding...half the stuff it writes about are nut-job narrow minded rationale at it's foundation! Talk about IRONIC. "EMPATHY" ????? It is anything BUT.... Throw in a few good common sense pointers and then mixing it up with some as incredible as "DO NOT date or have intimate relations with a person who is divorced, has children and whose ex-spouse is not yet re-married." ????

Register just to post something like that??!!!!!

I dunno as well, that's why it is an assignment if forumers want to do it. Was counterbalancing stuff about bad news in the press, and wondering if we can do something about it in a small, medium or large way. How can we, as a group of intelligent people, do something to help each other soften the blow of recession.

Here's nightmare's suggestions (and of course he has started his brotherhood )

Yes it could be about helping yourself and your immediate family, it could be about charities......but it is as dimple face has put it simply:

We are born with some degree of intolerant, however through education and
the need to change and improve people can lower this degree. A person with a very
high level of intolerant is always fierce and loud and irritates easily when provoked.

That is one reason why students of certain martial arts are taught to obey and give
    respect to the word "Tolerant".

One last post for my week.....have a friend called Tess....also in her 60s (perhaps we should be in our 60s to want to do something before we leave this world???).

(a photo of Tess and her partner Pete)

Anyway she was inspired by the tibetan custom of flying peace messages as high as possible in order to bring peace, goodwill and harmony to those the peace messages are for. So she decided to go to 6 high points round the world to deliver/speak out peace messages.

    - Climbed Chimborazo - the highest mountain from the centre of the earth
    - Climbed Aucanquilcha - the point closest to the sun in 2000
    - Climbed Mauna Kea - the tallest mountain in the world measured from it's base on the ocean floor
    - The magnetic North Pole
    - and has just completed getting to the South Pole to read out peace messages for another 3 hours.

There is one more point/mountain to climb which will happen in 2010 if any of you wanna come along and be involved. Or if you want to send her a peace message for that time you can send it here or here
