Thread: Nikon 70-200mm and 85mm lens

  1. #1

Default Nikon 70-200mm and 85mm lens

Hi I deciding to get a new lens to have better DOF; so far i take a lot of portraits or photos of people more often so I am not sure which one is more useful for me 70-200mm or 85mm.

    Body: Nikon D200
    Lenses owned: 18-200 VR. 18-55mm

Thanks in advance for the advice!

the 85 would be better in ur case.
get better dof control and much smaller and easier to handle.

mine advice because since u have the kit 18-55.. sell the 18-200 (cause overlapped with kits) n get 70-200. This is a very versatile lens.. one of the trinity lens.. and good for portrait too.

Personally... you would do well with the 85mm and add a 50 to it... these 2 would be a nice set.

For thinner dof, the larger aperture 85mm prime is of course better.
70-200 for the flexibility. It has good bokeh wide open as well.

own 70-200mm lens and Im loving it..
since u like to take pic of people, this lens can take candid shots of them cos of its
    focal length.
2.8 all the way, sharp & fast.
no regrets paying for this brand new lens even it cost me more than 2k.
u can rent both the lenses 1st to try it out before getting your very own.
from there you can decide better which one to get.
    cheers!

50mm f1.8 is the cheapest and affordable portrait lens to start with.
But if u have abit more to spend can consider 50/f1.4 or 85/f1.4..both give very nice bokeh.

Recommend the AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED since it has wide aperture and a fast motor dirve. Portraits excellent range usually is between 50mm to a little over 100mm. Hence, the Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is just nice falling into this category.

However, the AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED is more versatile since it can be telephoto further for a candid shot. The tricky part is it start from 70mm....Well, that's the beauty of Lens maker business...they give you so much choices that...well, what the heck, get both!! (if you can afford it, of course).
    Cheers!^^

85mm for portraiture will be ideal

but on crop body it comes a 127mm

so you decide if you need the lens

as for the 70-200, it's good for low light photography like maybe indoor sports

i agree on this too... but 85mm more specialized on portrait hence might be giving better result... but 70-200mm VR so versatile and fit for sports and candid and of course, portrait...

can i suggest to get both?
