Thread: How does one develop a photographic eye?

Default How does one develop a photographic eye?

Looking at most the photos in ClubSnap, I cannot help but noticed that the most important aspect of photography is the composition. Some of the composition are so everyday and simple, yet when captured gives a fantastic photo. How does one develop this photographic eye?

For me, I usually copy people's idea but then it makes it so commonplace, sigh! Tried new angles but then it does not turn out pleasant to the eyes. So how?

    Read lots of magazines, etc.

Go out and practice. Shoot, shoot and shoot.

Choose your best shots. Have a look at them. Be proud of your shots.

A few months later, look at your so-called best shots again, but this time, be your own harshest critic.

Repeat this cycle for the rest of your life.

look at a lot of good pictures.

think why they work, assimilate what is going on, try to understand what makes the picture good. be your worst critic. try every angle before you shoot, and be thoroughly honest with yourself whether it appeals afterward.

There's how I started till I reach what I'm today

    1) Study as much as possible great photographers pictures about their composition. Library is a good free source.
    2) When you look at surroundings, see things in a cropped vision (eg 4:3), ie narroe down your vision as though you are looking thru' the camera view finder.
    3) Stay in one place and try to compose the same subject in several ways, angles and analyse after download. Its better to concentrate one subject than rushing thru' as many places as possible.
    4) use as much imagination as possible.
    5) If possible, go with an experience friend (not ever in a grp) and learn tips from him.

Below are some quotations which may of help:

The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE. - Ernst Haas

I am not interested in shooting new things - I am interested to see things new. - Ernst Haas

Buying a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer. It makes you a Nikon owner. - Author Unknown

A good traveller has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving. - Lao Tzu

A good photograph is knowing where to stand. - Ansel Adams

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

I guess one of my greatest weakness is trigger happy. Never really think about a composition, just using a hunch and then shoot a few hoping to get a hit. Previously with film I was more discerning and looking back, there was less 'wastage'.

Guess i must learn how to see things in cropped vision as fresh angle suggested. Now how do I cropped my field of vision

Jokes aside, besides looking at award winning photos and learning the photographic styles, any books (may be non photographic too) which deal with artistic composition will be very useful.

This book by Freeman Patterson is highly recommended, Photography and the Art of Seeing.

any idea if it is available anywhere in singapore?

I like reading. There are a LOT of garbage books on "digital photography" that deals mainly about aperture, ISO, shutter speed. not many books on composition.

The books I have on composition are

    1) Masterclass in photography by Michael Bussel
    2) The photographer's eye by Michael Freeman
    3) photos with impact by Tom Mackie

I bought a Wiley book titled "Composition" but 90% of the book is NOT on composition....

    It's an instinct in yourself.

I guess SHOOTING more may help, but you'd need to be adventurous and try all sorts of possible angles for a nice subject which you may find. Angles, focal lengths, your perspective (high, low, etc) can make a difference....

Actually, it is more of know what you want out of your image at the end before taking the shot.
