If it's a good friend's wedding i am not going to lug around a dslr and waste time all day, be it ROM or dinner! (Supposing i'm not paid to cover)

No, in years to come (when i have gone into the working world and friends reach the age of soon-to-marry), i'll have funded for a classy Leica M( ) and attend like any other invitee, only whipping out my camera when i see "those moments"

Well she said that she do not need to hire a photographer since its just a ROM, during dinner then hire pro photographer. SO i tell her to just get someone with a camera will do since u wanted normal photos and she replied of cos she wanted better photos quality and no one has a camera besides me (cannot be right...) Anyway I told her no, unless u are willing to pay me lo
    Good for you!

Personally, i wouldn't mind giving discounts to close friends but expecting a photographer to do it FOC is just plain rude

Personally, I do not shoot events. Any events, no matter what, even if it were the Christmas Party my mother threw. Ok, I might bring my PnS and snap away, but that is all.

So, rather than being blunt, hahaha, I will tell whoever is blur enough to ask me, my hourly rates is US$5K. Works every time.

Some times, actually, every time, I am puzzled, why even bother to ask me to shoot their "whatever". I only shoot portraits.

people ask, you willing to help, that's fine.
you not willing to help, nothing wrong with that.

all these are under voluntary basis, you have no obligation to do it just because you have a camera, or a better camera.
don't let others take things for granted. must let people know they are asking you for a favor.

those people say don't mind helping friends or whatever...

all I can say is you ain't shoot enough yet, you will come to a time that you are overwhelming by all these requests. a time you want to put a stop on all these.

at that time, you can't say "yes" to friend A, "no" to friend B, and friends of your friends will come to you also, and the worst are your relatives, your GF/wife relatives, to a point till you want to sell away all your camera.

    So remember:

    learn to say "no".

don't bring your camera to your workplace.

Yup, learning to say a BIG FAT NO is impt.

But I think its ok to bring camera to workplace, look at it from another pt of view, it might bring you paid assignments

    Ask ourselves the same question,

"do we take advantage of our photographer-friends when we ask them to take photos for us (assuming we are not photographers or we know they are good) ?"
    always the Light, .... always.

I'm taken advantage of by the aunties in our neighbourhood to take their beautiful photos FOC.

It often takes me several nights to PS their grey hairs, wrinkes and spots on their skin and distort their figures to become slimmer.

If I say No to them it would mean the end of free mee huung, chicken rice; red bean soup, banana cakes etc. for me.

    ah, yes

just because you have a 'big, pro camera', people automatically assume you're a event photographer.
