    agree and moved.

and TS, before this becomes a free-for-all bashing session, i suggest u be a little more specific in ur queries. night moving object can range from trying to hit a target in almost pitch black conditions to shooting a F1 car in artifical sunlight....

first thing you want to do is to get the exposure right....

if you have no idea how to determine the exposure, can take a exposure on P mode, try bracket from plus three exposure compensation, to minus three exposure compensation. than you will see which is the right exposure you are looking for. (-3), (-2), (-1), (+1), (+2), (+3)

than you take base exposure, try take shots with different combination of shutter speed, with the correspond aperture and ISO. you will see which is effects what you are looking for.
    shutter speed: 1mins, 30sec 15sec, 8sec, 4 sec, 2 sec, 1 sec, 1/2 sec, 1/4 sec, 1/8 sec, 1/15 sec, 1/30 sec, 1/60 sec, 1/125 sec, 1/250 sec, 1/500 sec, 1/1000 sec, 1/2000 sec, 1/4000 sec, 1/8000 sec.

it depends a lot on what you want.

    also on the lighting there.

take a reading to check the light and then one of two,

    1) a camera with around twenty thousand ISO and about 10fps like 1DMk3

    2) a camera with about 20fps and ISO 6400 like K20D.

but easiest solution is to use a video camera...

thats the point. at least he will learn that the setting will get him nothing but a black screen. and he will not use that setting.

Its part of what we call LEARNING.

unless he will like us to create an excel spreadsheet about all the potential combinations in the entire world from f1.4 to f/40, from 1" to 1/4000, not to mention the different kinds of lighting that will influence everything else... and that, is a VERY HUGE spoon to be feedin him with.

If you dunno, set to SQUARE mode. Then press the ROUND ROUND button. Picture taken. Then press the TRIANGLE button to see pic.

Remember.. SQUARE > ROUND > TRIANGLE.
