Given fact that brand new tamron cost 900-950 and resale nikon/canon cost 800-900.

Pros of Tamron : longer reach
Cons: Slow Auto focus/ soft at 270 f6.3

IQ seems almost the same for most part according to reviews on the net.

which lens would you buy and why?

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF

Tamron Telephoto AF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD

Around $900+ damage. This is what i would recommend to get with your budget.

Just a note... the Nikon/Canon version focus faster under low light(zoom max) because of it's F5.6 compared to F6.3....

Agreed. Only make useful travel lenses that you pack along with say something like D40/D60?

I disagree.... they are good for a "one-time only" event shooting too.... it is either to use a second camera or a 18-200mm lens to cover the whole range...

Why do you say that? Would like your perpective on this statement. What would you bring along a vacation anyway?

i got a 18-270 in the end...after seeing too many Nikon VR issues on 18-200... expected lifespan of that lens...- 3-5 years? if use constantly?

18-270 gives 6 years warrenty in states and 3 in SG...so should be more reliable i hope

Are you using a D90? If yes, have you tried AF in LiveView using the 18-270mm? I heard there is with the AF problem is it?

Well... since you've bought it... have fun with it.

Let's hope you don't get fed up with it too soon and get something else instead. And I thought you were using a Canon. If Nikon, you can consider the Tamron 17-50 f2.8... it's a good performer.
