The victim has much to be blamed as the attackers. If he has not been tempting them by showing his expensive camera in a quiet and isolated place....
bringing a weapon like a knife will get your into trouble if police conducts check.

Anyway prevention is always better, avoiding route you are unsure of.
What is few minutes wasted if you get back safely, compare to never getting there.
Make a big detour if one is unsure.
Also I never try stunts that endanger myself, for instance a particular shot that I thinks give me a better composition endanger myself or my equipment. I am just a hobby photographer, and not paid.
