Thread: Chope seat using tissue has upgraded!

The trick is to start with yourself.
If you consider it a problem, then never do the seat chope-ing thing.
When your friends do that, tell them that you disagree with it.

I don't think it's a big deal if you sit down at someone's "choped" seat.
All you have to do when they get back and ask you why you are in the seat, is to say that
"Oh, I didn't know that putting a pack of tissue on the table means you've reserved the seat."

They won't be able to argue with you convincingly because they know that it's a social practise but it's not actually a proper way of doing things, they don't really have any legal justification against you.

It's the same thing for jaywalking: alot of people do it, doesn't mean that it's actually right and proper.

However, that also seems like a threat of some sorts to cower to the unreasonable? Of course we have to protect ourselves, so thinking a bit would be important. Most of the time, the tissue packet owner uses the packet to chope four seats (as in a fast food restaurant). I'd still take the seat, and when the person comes back, there are still three seats for him to choose.

The location also plays an important part. Of course I wouldn't do so in Geylang at 11pm. Otherwise, seriously, I am not worried.

By and large, the fear of most people is probably not from getting beaten up. It's more of being embarrassed in public by the office girl who gives you the stare, the auntie who would scream at you, and all the kaypohs videoing the incident and posting it to STOMP!
can you garantee when you do what you say you will do, it is not the wrong place at the wrong time?

also, from my writing about my past experience, i am sure you should know that i am not simpleton right?

count me unlucky, i do met people who will argue with you, at funan, marina, suntec etc.....

i do agree it should start with oneself and influence family and friends.

for those who wants to be hero, pls read my experience and decide if you can handle it.

    anyway, my last post here.

the trick when they argue is just to smile and not budge.
What are they going to do? it's easier for them to just look for another seat rather than get into a fight with you.
And Singaporeans are very good at not fighting, they rather bitch on the internet or call the authorities. but they have nothing to use against you.

There's nothing "hero" about standing up for what you believe in.
If more people did that our society would have more self confidence in general

Singaporean reactions to things they disagree with:

    Clicking their tongues
    Complaining in ST Forum
    Complaining on the internet

when the larger population acts this way, there must be a good reason.

there are ways to get a seat gracious anot, & there are ways to make a meal more easy to stomach. when the going gets bumpy, gotta do wad i gotta do to sit & eat. nothing more than that!

Oh boy this topic again - I've discussed the legal aspects of stealing, littering and all before in the other thread. Moral of the story, do whatever you want, those who want to use tissue; prepare for it to get stolen and dont whine after that. Those who want to take away the tissue, go ahead. I know I would.

Those who think they can get me for stealing, lets try it out one day. Tell me the days you are going to be with your tissue paper and I'll try an unannounced visit and see who prevail in the end.

I'll call the police on you for littering

Sorry your assertion that it is accepted by the majority is flawed. Just because the majority prefers to buy and eat chewing gum does not make it legal

I agree with Mattlock and synapseman's positions.

    It is an acceptable habit.

LOOOOOONG discussion about Tissue Paper Society here:

    http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showt...t=tissue+paper

    This will never end.

I wonder what our friends in developed countries have to say about our never-ending discussions (and the sheer amount of time spent on such) on Tissue Paper Ettiquete.

going to be jobless, maybe can start collecting these tissues and re-sell, re-use, re-whatever...

Well, I suppose the Malaysian, Singaporean and those who exercise this local widely used method will continue till next , next , next , graceful generation. Once a lady told me politely that she used that tissue to occupy the table. I replied politely: I found this tissue unwanted on this table, you may take it back and join me for lunch. Her face was so long but she had to sit with me and her coming colleagues for lunch together

    Shorty!

You are a STELLAR example of what our society needs more of!

First, you care for the planet by saving and recycling!

Then you exhibit charm, grace and composure under unpleasant anti-social pressure!

And to top it all off, you epitomise the idealogy of friendliness and even seal the deal by sharing your meal time lunch with a lady, and her colleagues as well!

So far no one has dared moved my zip-loc bags of soaked, used sanitary pads.

Take ALL the tissue paper, then RUN!

People will not chase. They will just shake head and say "Poor thing. Economy so bad have to steal tissue paper liao!" Who knows, mabbie next day they do the kind thing and put double packets for tissue as their 'contribution' to society!

precisely. to the throngs of people who claim this is an acceptable practice... I see people jaywalking often. does that make it any more acceptable/legal? no, it doesn't.

I see people merging senselessly in and out of traffic just to get ahead. does that make it any more acceptable/legal? no, it doesn't.

I happen to watch a lot of mafia shows. does that mean if I carry out a hit on somebody, does it make it more acceptable/legal? no, it doesn't.

bottom line is, I will (and have) continue taking seats that have been reserved by a packet of tissue paper. I would still carry a tray and look around and ask to see if I can join in. if a human being, such as myself, is embarrassed to even socialise and have the basic decency and courtesy to strike a conversation with a fellow human being, then... honestly, we're not that much different from our less evolved animal species who resort to marking of territory and grunting. seriously.

Try talking to most strangers at communal tables and they will eye you in absolute suspicion.

Try striking up a conversation with females and they will think you're desperate.

Not sharing an opinion, but fact.

SAD SAD world we live in.

I'm just kidding about the bags of used sanitary pads btw.

But who knows ... it might make for interesting TNP fodder!
