Both 5D mark II and a used 1D mark III are of a similiar price. Given the choice which you would choose?

C'mon... I think you should know better as both very much suit different needs. If you don't already know, in brief, 5DII is a high-res, full-frame landscape camera and never for sports due to it's low frame rate at only 3.9fps. Whereas 1DIII has flying frame rate of 10fps but lower resolution at 10.1MP and it's 1.3x crop factor.

5D Mk 2, 1Ds Mk 2 and 1D Mk 3 are all around the same range, just to make your decision harder.

I will take the 5D Mk II as its using a digic IV processor, has a very very usable video mode that is great for making high def movies and its ISO performance.
the saving grace of the 1d MK III is its autofocus system and weather resistant build and a built in grip. |

It depends on individual shooting requirement. For sports, event and wild life, 1D mk3 is a better choice due to it's superior AF system and frame-per-second speed. For static portrait, landscape and cityscape, 5D mk2 is better due to it's resolution power and full frame advantage (wide angle and bokeh).
I've choosen 1D mkiii for it's all-round capability. Last edited by tonylim; 22nd January 2009 at 10:33 AM. |

I think 1D III is a step higher than 5D II.
I'll take 1D III for speed and AF system. There's nothing to worry about the handling and the high ISO is quite nice too, usable till 3200 although the highest is 6400. May be 5D is better for potraits but 1D is not a far behind. Finally, the sound of 10 fps is ![]() ![]()

![]() .Yeah you're right, man. The high end one, usually is heavily used. But then a used unit coming close to 5D mark II really sound attractive , just a like a used RX8.As for me, I shoot for studio potrait to sports. Looking for an all rounder camera which offer high IQ and good AF for tracking. I knew this must be a 1Ds mark III but is a way off my budget and the depreciation for this unit is the steepest. Some has raise the point traveling/carrying a 1D mark III. Anyone regretting travelling to overseas with this 1D mark III? I knew the 5D strength is on lanscape and potraits but not sure if it's can be push for sports? Anyone own a 5D mark II use it for sports? Or on the other way, a 1D mark III user not satisfy with the IQ and wanting the 5D mark II IQ and it's clean high ISO image( which is comparable to the Nikon D3)? So given the choice, with the above shooting style, what's your decision? |

I'll choose the 5D2 as it is lighter, higher MP and superb clean images at high ISO. Btw I use it for sports too. I have the 50D but I often choose the 5D2 when shooting sports as I prefer the lower fps. Just a single frame is enough sometimes.
