are there any canon 400D users facing the same problem as me?
i've always set the auto-rotate function on my 400D to be "ON" for both the camera and computer. one day, when i transferred the photos to my computer, i realised auto-rotate didn't happen. i've gotten really reliant on this and now that the function is bonkers it annoys me to rotate my photos myself. what can be the problem? hardware/software? i've tried setting it to "OFF", take a few picts, then set it to "ON" again. but no luck. anyone?? |

I think auto-rotate only works with certain programs.
In most applications like photoshop and windows viewer, rotating the jpeg file causes permanent damage (so the warning dialog boxes always scream out at me says), so I suspect that such programs do not allow a global auto-rotate to be transferred. I may be wrong though. |

i batch PP my photos in PS (for levels, contrast, etc and (c) notice) so once it comes out of the oven it's good to go (upload).

I agree with Charles that it may have something to do with the software.
On Windows explorer, I had no problems previously with regards to auto rotate. But after I installed a new viewer, Picassa, I started to have this problem. Because I also designated Picassa as the default application to open JPEG. But whe I use Zoombrowser, pics are auto rotated. I do not know if you have the same problem or not. Try opening the pics with Canon's supplied software and see if it is auto rotated or not. Hopefully there is nothing wrong with your camera. |

Heh, thank goodness for Adobe Lightroom 2 ^^
I think it should be a software glitch. When I used zoombrowser last time, it kept screwing with the rotating. I got pissed, and switched over to google picasa, and finally to Adobe Lightroom 2 now.

if you use EOS Utility to import files and if it opens Zoom Browser EX after importing, go to Zoom Browser preferences (menu > Tools > Preferences > Rotation) and select 'Rotate Original Image'. It'll permanently rotate the image upon importing.

i've never used any external software to transfer the photos. always used the most basic method - windows explorer > select all > drag to computer.
i've installed photoscape recently though. perhaps that could be the cause. will uninstall and try again. |

Cameras do not store a image rotated. Instead, they flag in the EXIF info that the image should be rotated. When you use software that are EXIF compliant (Photoshop, Lightroom, ACDSee), they will read the rotate flag and rotate the image accordingly.
Some other software just see the image, and not the rotate flag embedded in the EXIF. That's why you don't see the image rotated.

Is it possible that you did the rotation manually in Windows Explorer once and for all? It's not difficult, but I'd rather that EOS Utility + ZB do it for me. |
