Thread: Investing in happiness

    Default Investing in happiness

Anyway I was thinking about the current financial storm. People getting depressed, suicidal, killed themselves because their investments or investments they handle for other people dropped drastically in value.

People make financial investments. The next door aunty also play the stock market, put money in FD etc.

How about the idea of investing in happiness? What do you think?

Ok it's a little hard for me to develop the idea as
    - How to measure/quantify happiness?
    - Can you "grow" happiness?
    - And not sure one could "deposit" happiness in the first place!

    Also
    - You know when you are happy, but how would you know if you will be happy the next moment, or the next day etc

Maybe the question is not very good

Not very well-formed thoughts, but hey.

    take the risk knowing full well what it encompasses;

keep a basic minimum in safe deposits to ensure that you are shielded to a certain extent tolerable.

    and be content.

Glad to hear someone think of this investment. I hear a discussion about this long ago.
Somehow, I think I am doing my investment in happiness now. Cuz I am saving/investing something to make me happy.

Below is the thing I invest in to make me happy:

    1) Going back to UK for my Master – Saving Money and will be able to go by next year(if I dun get fire next month).
    2) Take picture/photo – doing it every week, guess this is also investment…
    3) Get myself a house - Saving, right now not much. But will never give up…
    4) Get myself a 10-20mm – Saving, also consider gua….

I guess my answer is not so good also.. just to share..sorry if the answer is way out of the line/topic

Pictures always should have a special story behind it or a special meaning to the photographer.

Now that comes the closest to really "investing" in happiness. heh.. Nothing to do with spending money to make more and buying things. Invest in a mindset change first. If this is not conquered, whatever you spend or buy will not make your happiness any better.

Do you really invest in Happiness?
That will depend on how you want to invest?
Is is with money, time, new knowledge, new direction
in life, new perspective, new mindset, setting a new goal.
However not many can get happiness without investing
with some kind of money or deeds.

For most people it a "WANT", meaning you want
    to be happy.

When is the time to be happy?
Where is the place to be happy?
What is the best way to invest in happiness?
    or
What is the best method to be happy inside?
Is happiness felt inside your mind or your heart?

Sure many who experienced the spiritual journey
to the soul will have happiness,
These people did not have to invest with cash, they
invest with a desire to perform a new deed on a new
    journey.

bad times spark a trend to think about things 1 take for granted when times are good. when things turn rosy again most will just throw caution to the wind & dance till situations head sound again.

when so many are enjoying the time of their lives when the sailing is smooth, nobody 1 2 be wet blanket speak about staying grounded. the mood to be cautious just wasn't there...

    sad fact.

When Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire,
do you know how happy the civilians are on both sides.

For three weeks there were no peace of mind but
sounds of gunfire and rockets without knowing whether
you can live until the next day or the next few seconds.

With such experiences, can you forget what happiness is?

Helen Keller said that "True Happiness is the
meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim
    and end of human existence."

    Do you agree?

    Do you agree?

Yes i agree. Just that "true happiness" carries a different meaning for different people. Most i believe equates true happiness with material possessions.

So what exactly is true happiness?

    Will contentment brings true happiness?

    buy a dog.

remember that in order to know what happiness is, you have to experience pain and sadness.

One thing I am doing now in my quest for happiness (haha, sounds like adventure!) is that I recall times when I felt happy. Also times when I didn't feel happy.

With those past experiences I can try to step out of myself for a while and try to understand what's going on when say I get angry, depressed, etc.

Personally, I think I will also have to be at ease with myself. If you can see the thoughts in my mind... you will go aiyoh!!

I just read this somewhere, and will reproduce this old story of a traveller who met a wise man at the walls of a city.

"What sort of people live here?" enquired the traveller.

The sage replied, "What are the people like where you have come from?"

"Oh they are thoughtless, bigoted and hypocritical," replied the traveller.

"That is just how you will find the people here," said the sage.

Some time later another wanderer approached the wise man and asked, 'Can you tell me what the people are like who live within these walls?'

The sage said, "Tell me what the people are like where you come from."

"Why, they are kind and generous and everyone looks out for each other," the traveller replied.

"Well, that is just how you will find the people here," declared the sage.

some times like that, some times not like that. reality is more complex than a story. there are many many stories about reality...

    Happiness is relative.

As some of the examples have shown, it ranges from the basics in life, to the nebulous.

Sammy hits the nail on the head when he said, invest in a change of mindset, but to evoke a change, one has to be aware of the current. How many people are truly able to be brutally honest with themselves, and even if the intent is there, is the ability lacking?

    Just thinking aloud ...

I invest in happiness quite often.

the other day I made a choice to have a succulent piece of steak done medium rare, instead of chicken rice. it certainly made me happier.

a few weeks back I decided to plonk down about $500 to resurrect and old guitar that has gone on in life tragically. that's an investment for me because when it comes back it will sound so sweeeeeeeeeeeet!
    chicken fight!

    Gastronomical and musical gratification!

    Hmm ...

    Just remembered a tale I read when I was a kid ...

The Blue Bottle by Ray Bradbury
(Available usually in a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury at most NLB branches)

What is it that you can imagine, put into one tidy little blue bottle, that will send you on a venture with years of searching? Is it the future? Or how about he past? Something from your childhood? A tree you climbed? And is it really different depending on the person who finds it? Or is it simply the very search for the bottle, and nothing else?

Here is a tale of what is happiness. But the story is also far more than just finding happiness. It is somewhat of an alarming piece, where Bradbury brings forth onto the stage some understanding of the significance of God, of belief, and the utter simplicity of death.
