I may be wrong, but I got this hunch that big camera's seem to be back in fashion nowadays. Those who actually buy a FZ28 tends to be those who think they can't handle a DSLR. Its amazing how many school-GIRLS carry a DSLR in their bag daily. Even though they're not very serious into photography. Its like the new point and shoot!

By the way, don't get the Tamron first!

A new VC (synonym to Image Stabilizers- IS) version of the 17-50mm F2.8 Tamron is launching on 12 Sept for Nikon!

hi guys, i got my fz28 last month, have been shooting quite a bit, was looking for fz discussion groups and found this thread but realise it's not exactly dedicated to fz users. i've some problem with my focusing as well as macro shots. i usually shoot manual, sometimes the pictures is not sharp and i get frisutrated. sometimes if i do AF, i dont get the distance right and the camera cant AF for me - must be something i'm doing wrong. havent really figure out MF yet. so would be great if anyone can help!

Hi ruffgaws, congrats on your new camera, I sold mine earlier this year, and sadly miss it quite often. Using iA should give you sharp pictures cuz it is virtually a high zoom point and shoot that my wife was very confident to use. I hardly ever used Manual mode, I would more often use Aperature priority mode or Shutter priority.
If you are not sure what f stop to use in aperature just click onto iA mode take note of what f stop is selected by the camera and start with that when you switch back to Aperature mode. You can then vary your f stop to experiment with depth of field.
As far as macro shots go I didn't have a great deal of sucess with macro setting on camera. Only got some fair results once I bought a Raynox DCR 250.
Enjoy your camera and post some of your shots for us to see.
    Cheers

Thanks Clunk, i'll definitely try that!
i use iA mode only at the last resort, that forces me to practice getting use to changing shutter speed and f-stops. trying to familiarise myself with my fz28 as much as possible before my cambodia trip in nov! (: and yep, will post up some shots soon.

any advice from anyone on getting the exposure right?

Hi ruffgaws, welcome to the thread!

Exposure can be rather frustrating when you get your first prosumer with a little more manual control can't it? No worries.

The basics of exposure, really comes down to how much light hits the sensor, in a way you could say the "speed" this is happening, more light = more exposed. So there are basically 3 elements:

ISO: Sensor 'speed', bigger number = more exposed
Shutter speed: again longer time = more exposed (like 1/60s is longer than 1/200s)
Lens 'speed', known as aperture. smaller number = faster = more exposed ( F2.8 is faster than F4)

A balance of these three elements determines your exposure, you could play with this in the manual mode to help your learning curve. On the FZ, once you're in M mode, use the joystick to change the 2 numbers shown on your preview screen (center bottom), and there is a light meter that goes from -2 to 0 to +2.

0 on the light meter is "often" the most ideal exposure for a start, but the light meter can be fooled by surroundings. For a start, you can just rely on the preview screen when you hold the shutter, adjust accordingly

Using the A, or S mode, namely aperture or shutter modes, allows you to lock either Aperture or Shutter at your choice. The ISO can be auto or specified by you if you like too. That will leave the camera to decide the other elements to achieve a standard exposure ( 0 on the light meter). This can again be offset by using the exposure compensation. Say if you compensate to +1 on the light meter, the camera will set the remaining elements to meet a +1 over-exposure.

Wiki has a pretty detailed documentation on this if you want to read it

    thanks ombre.
yep right now i'm depending alot on the light meter and i find it somewhat time consuming.
anw guys, some photos from my fz28:

the last photo, problem with focusing on the flower.
i was in M mode. usually this happens if i dont use macro mode.

do you guys think there's such a thing as the perfect exposure?

Exposure seems fine for a start, personally I would say its a tinge under-exposed for my taste.

Perfect exposure... there is, mathematically. (how your camera sensor does it)
There is, objectively. (Replicating all the colors in their correct intensities)
Artisically, there probably isn't, anything goes, as long as you like it.

But to me, good exposure = correctly representing the scene as seen by the eye. Sometimes some parts are exaggerated, so it won't really follow the actual scene either... so... its potentially subjective?

nice shot... i like the cat one...but lag of abit more bokeh AKA depth of field, which sometime might be limited to fz...

anyway as for ur flower short, i have that problem before... ok, basically, there is a focus distance, meaning, there is a minimum distance req for the camera to focus on the right things, if ur subject is too close, the cam will auto focus the background, which to him is easier to focus (camera are lazy too..LOL)... so sometime it is necessary to go to manual focus (MF), to focus the flower urself

to sum it up, when u have difficulty focusing on the micro:
    1) move backward abit
    2) focus on something big and same distance as the flower, so u will know if u step backward enough
    3) Manual focus (last resort when ur flower is too small to be focus)

go ahead and practice ur micro, coz FZ dun have mechanical shutter, so shoot like there is no tml also never mind one...

anyway if u are interested in micro, u might wanna consider getting raynox DCR-250... which cost about $100... i heard there is a new version DCR-202 or somethng, slightly more expensive i think

i can't remember but i think this was taken with raynox when i was having my fz18

o.o, that butterfly shot is good. Surprising that the DOF is so thin even on a prosumer. Have you done any macros with your D90 yet?

Hi Skyguy, long time no see, how about letting us see some pics from your D90.
Hopefully will be coming back to Spore in Jan, providing I can get a reasonable priced flight.
Want to see the new grandson.

Hi guys, also have been very busy, too busy to play with camera. Have just completed renovation of kitchen and bathroom. Amy is not silly, she is now in Spore and has escaped all the packing and unpacking of the cupboards and also the mopping and dusting. Also have painted the entire apartment, no longer red walls and yellow walls, (Chinese colour scheme I think) just off-white.
Last day of school holidays today then only ten weeks to the end of the year break-up.
Mr Ombre, or Navlem, what prime lens would you suggest I get for my a330? I would like something that is a bit wider angle and good for taking portrait shots.
