17-40 and 17-55 are equal in focal length at wide end

17-55 has one stop faster than 17-40

What do you normally shoot? Do you need f2.8 most of the time?

Good for me may not be good for you as we have different need

17-55 as it has less barrel distortions at 17mm, starts from 2.8 and with IS but a cost a few hundreds more.

They are the same, 17mm

Chose a lens that is below 17mm if you want to go wider

10-22mm is wider but then you find it too hard to control....

TS....

17-40mm & 1.6x camera = 17 x 1.6 = 27.2mm at wide....

17-55mm & the same 1.6x camera = 17 x 1.6 = 27.2mm at wide....

Therefore..... both are the same in 'Wide'

You want - WID-ER - then chose any lens that have a smaller number infornt..... namely 16/15/14/13/12/11mm..... since 10mm you find too hard to control
