Default Simple yet effective way of loading 35mm film onto stainless steel reel

Most of us are using the plastic reel, with one common reason i.e. easy loading. But if you get hold of a stainless steel reel and tank, you will love it despite difficulty in loading the film.

This video shows a simple yet effective way of loading by rolling the roller. Give it a try

Actually steel reels are easier to load than plastic.

Maybe it's my steel canister problem but I found it very hard to get the film clipped into the centre straight. If it's slightly slanted the film starts to buckle when loading. If you can get the centre to clip on correctly then everything else goes in rather smoothly.

Botched up one reel very badly and then it was back to plastic for me.

I also found that the plastic steel lid doesn't feel as securely fastened on as my other plastic tanks, but then again that's just me being paranoid perhaps.

I see no reason to switch to steel reels since plastic reels are already so easy to load.

Actually steel reels are much cheaper. I think you can get them from china for a few dollars each. I believe you can also make do with less developer as the cannister is smaller.

Actually, stainless steel developing tank has various advantages :

1) Use less chemicals.

2) When you invert during agitation, it doesn't spill (to me this is important, try to develop 2 rolls of 35mm on an AP or Paterson tank, you will know what I mean).

3) Plastic tanks have a better insulation effect on the external temperature to the film. But if you don't pre-soak the film enough, the developer temperature will definitely rise at least 2 degC during the agitation process. So with a water bath, stainless steel serves a better heat conduction to compensate for the rise in developer temperature. Found out while doing a roll of 120mm.

4) Plastic reel cannot be re-use unless it is properly dry. Stainless steel reel, you can re-load just by cleaning with a cloth.
