    Question Maths question

    Hi all,

    I've a maths problem sum that need help

    4 men took 96 hrs to complete task A. 6 women took 166.4 hrs to complete the same task. How long will it take 2 men & 4 women to complete that same task?

    The final solution is 162.8 hrs (rounded).

    Does anyone knows how to solve it?

    Thanks!

    My answer is 108.5 hrs..

    Time taken by 1 man = 96*4 = 384hrs

    Time taken by 1 woman = 166.4*6 = 998.4hrs

    Thus 1 woman = 384/998.4 = 0.385 men

    Time taken by 2 men and 4 women = 384/(2+(4*0.385)) = 108.5 .

    Long time since I did a maths question.

    PS: Maybe the answer is a Real World answer as it accounts for the loss in time when the men and women are chatting up each other.

    i do it another way, though quite similar and get that 108.522 also,
    guess there's more 'work' when guys n gers get together =p
    cheers =p

    jus a 2nd though abt the ans, if 6 woman takes 166.4, 2men and 4 woman(6 person also) wouldn't take tat close of time 162.8hrs (diff by onli 4 hours) as we can see by comparion tat the men is far more efective then the gers.
    guess there some wrong numerics in either the ans or qns =p
    cheers =p

    Hey, my answer is similar to reno77's answer.. what could be wrong??

    Task A requires 384 hours of a man's work
    Task A requires 998.4 hours of a woman's work

    Hence, 1 woman is equivalent to 2.6 men

    For the same amount of work, 2 man and 4 woman will take 384 / (2+4/2.6) = 108.52173913043478260869565217393 hours

    heh..

    Well, not exactly. Since a man is stronger than a woman, he'll get more things done within a shorter time. But then again, it might be mental work. AHha. Not stated!

    2 men and 4 women?

    The 2 men would 'beo' the 2 women and run off somewhere else, leaving 2 women to handle the job.

    The 2 women, knowing full well that 4 men took 96 hours, will try to do it under 96 hours. But being women, they will gossip about the 2 men and 2 women, and lose track of time.

    Still, they manage to complete it in 162.792002 hours, which is 162.8 when rounded, which is the correct answer.

    Maths, so simple.

    I can get 162.8 if its 384/(2+0.358) , maybe the given answer is wrong ?

    Answer given is wrong....

    Let man=A and Woman=B

    4A=96h
    6B=166.4h

    Thus 4A*96=6B*166.4

    Solving, we have 384A=998.4B

    thus A=2.6B

    if A=2.6B
    Then 2A+4B=2*2.6B+4B

    Total B for the job=9.2B

    Using 6B=166.4h

    We'll have (6/9.2)*166.4=108.52h

    Checking, 4A=4*2.6B=10.4B
    if 6B=166.4,
    then 10.4B=(6/10.4)*166.4=96h=4A...

    Thus 2 men and 4 women will take 108.52h....

    Hi all, thanks for the replies. First of all, I must apologise, I made a mistake, its 9 women taking 166.4 hrs, not 6 women. The rest remains the same.

    Once again, so sorry for the stupid typo

    You've heard the story of the boy who cried wolf?

    Anyway, there are lots of sample workings here. You should be able to refer to anyone of them (incld mine ) and solve your problem, whatever the new numbers are.

    answer is 162.7, well, 162.6974847 to be exact. using the same method as the rest has described.

    Revise answer..........

    Let man=A and Woman=B

    4A=96h
    6B=166.4h

    Thus 4A*96=6B*166.4

    Solving, we have 384A=1497.6B

    thus A=3.9B

    if A=3.9B
    Then 2A+4B=2*3.9B+4B

    Total B for the job=11.8B

    Using 9B=166.4h

    We'll have (9/11.8)*166.4=126.9h
    Thus 2 men and 4 women will take 126.9h....
